Cairn Oil & Gas, part of the Vedanta Group and India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, has initiated the sourcing of 25 megawatts (MW) of captive renewable hybrid power in partnership with Serentica Renewables India Pvt. Ltd. The companies have entered into a Power Delivery Agreement to support Cairn’s operations in Barmer, Rajasthan.
Under this agreement, renewable hybrid energy will meet approximately 20 percent of the total power demand at India’s largest onshore oil-producing asset. This marks a significant step toward integrating clean energy into conventional oil and gas operations.
Hybrid Renewable Supply from Karnataka Facility
As part of the deal, Cairn has begun getting renewable energy from a mix of solar and wind sources at Serentica Renewables’ Gadag facility in Karnataka. The deal has a 70 percent Capacity Utilisation Factor (CUF), which makes sure that the power supply is always steady and dependable.
The 25 MW project is expected to generate around 153 million units of renewable energy annually, which will be supplied to Cairn’s Mangala facility in Barmer.
Significant Carbon Reduction and Compliance Benefits
The switch to renewable hybrid energy is expected to cut Cairn’s carbon emissions by about 115 kilotonnes of CO₂e every year. This drop is like planting almost 5.75 million trees every year.
In addition to lowering emissions, the initiative will strengthen Cairn’s compliance with statutory Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) requirements, aligning operations with regulatory and sustainability standards.
Advancing Sustainability and Energy Transition Goals
This partnership represents a strategic milestone in India’s energy transition journey, combining Cairn’s operational expertise with Serentica Renewables’ capabilities in delivering round-the-clock clean power. It reflects a shared commitment to advancing low-carbon energy solutions while ensuring energy security.
The agreement forms part of Cairn’s broader roadmap to expand its renewable energy usage by the end of the decade and accelerate progress toward achieving Net Zero Carbon goals.
Cairn has been in business for more than 30 years, and its main goal is still to lead the way in sustainability-led transformation. This partnership is a great example of how working together can help bring clean energy into traditional energy sectors, which is good for India’s long-term economic and environmental goals.
