ChemVolt Global has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to establish a 5 GWh lithium-ion cell manufacturing gigafactory in the state, with a planned investment of INR 2,500 crore. The facility aims to support domestic demand for grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), clean mobility solutions, and commercial & industrial (C&I) energy storage applications.
The gigafactory is expected to foster a local ecosystem of suppliers and service providers around advanced battery manufacturing, bolstering India’s domestic battery production capabilities.
Job Creation and Economic Impact
The project is anticipated to generate approximately 1,500 direct jobs across manufacturing, engineering, operations, and quality functions. In addition, more than 4,000 indirect jobs are expected to be created through component suppliers, equipment manufacturers, logistics providers, and ancillary industries, contributing significantly to regional economic growth.
Phased Implementation and Production Plans
The gigafactory will be developed in two phases. Phase I will establish a 1 GWh advanced cell production line by Q3 2027. Phase II will add 4 GWh, reaching a total capacity of 5 GWh by Q2 2029. The plant will produce 314 Ah and 750 Ah prismatic lithium-ion cells designed for grid-scale storage, heavy electric vehicles, and C&I applications, catering to both domestic and international markets.
“The Andhra Pradesh gigafactory is envisioned as a national-scale manufacturing initiative driving high-value job creation, strengthening domestic battery supply chains, and positioning India as a global hub for advanced lithium-ion cell production,” said Kuldeep Gupta, Founder and CEO of ChemVolt Global.
Expansion of Energy Storage Portfolio
Alongside the gigafactory announcement, ChemVolt Global unveiled the expansion of its Energy Storage System (ESS) portfolio. The Starlight Series includes a 5.016 MWh DC block in a 20-ft container with liquid cooling and a 9.16 MWh AC block in a 40-ft container with four-hour duration and liquid cooling. The Titan Series offers Titan 1 (1.6 MWh AC block) and Titan 2 (2.5 MWh DC block) in 12-ft cabinets, designed for commercial and industrial applications.
