Coal India Limited (CIL) has got a contract from GRIDCO Limited for the implementation of a BESS project in Odisha. The company disclosed the development in a regulatory filing submitted to the stock exchanges on Thursday.
The BESS contract has been awarded by GRIDCO Limited, Odisha, which is a domestic concern, according to Coal India Limited’s statement to the stock exchanges pursuant to the provisions of Regulation 30 of SEBI (LODR) Regulations, 2015.
The firm has been issued a letter that states that it has been awarded “Letter of Award for Setting up of 320 MWh (80 MW for 4 hours) BESS Plant in two Clusters. Cluster-1 at Padampur and Bolangir @ Rs. 3.04 lakh/ MW/Month tariff. Cluster-2 at Bhatli and Basta @ Rs. 3.05 lakh/ MW/Month tariff.”
The battery energy storage system will help with power management as it will store electricity for use at appropriate times. Coal India Limited indicated that the battery energy storage system will be completed within 18 months from the signing of the agreement.
The company should be ready to provide all the relevant documents within 20 days as stated in the Letter of Award. Thereafter, the company needs to sign the BESPA Agreement and present the Performance Bank Guarantee from Coal India.
Projects shall be developed under a build own operate (BOO) structure. The BESSD is responsible for the setup, operation, and maintenance of the BESS in order to provide availability of the energy storage system for use by GRIDCO to charge/discharged the BESS as required.
The projects will be eligible for viability gap funding (VGF) support at INR 18 lakh/MWh.
The projects shall be installed within the substation sites that have been identified in the STU network of Odisha. The land identification and acquisition shall be the responsibility of the GRIDCO/OPTCL that owns the identified substation sites. The land shall be made available to the BESSD on a use-of-rights basis.
Installation of the BESS and connection of the BESS to the STU network as well as the construction of the bay and safety of the equipment / personnel will all fall within the purview of the BESSD.
The scheduling for the charge/discharge activities of the BESS shall be within the purview of SLDC/GRIDCO. The battery energy storage system shall be charged by taking energy from the OPTCL grid and discharged by feeding energy back to the OPTCL grid.
The BESSD must guarantee a minimum system availability of 95 percent on an annual basis.
The software for the EMS of the BESS shall be made entirely in India. The utilization of recycled or used battery modules for the project is not allowed at all.
In March 2026, Coal India secured a 187.5 MW/750 MWh BESS project from Telangana Power Generation Corporation at a tariff of INR 3.14 lakh/MW/month. The BESS plant will be set at the Choutuppal substation in Telangana.
