In a major step toward strengthening sustainable urban mobility, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off 200 new electric buses, reinforcing the national capital’s transition toward cleaner public transport.
The launch, held at the East Vinod Nagar depot, also saw the inauguration of key transport infrastructure projects, including the Madanpur Khadar bus terminal and a new administrative building, aimed at improving operational efficiency and commuter experience.
Expansion of Electric Bus Fleet
Delhi’s public transport fleet now has about 6,300 buses, and more than 4,500 of them are electric. The Chief Minister said that the government wants to greatly increase this number. As part of its long-term plan for clean mobility, it wants to have 14,000 buses on the road by 2028–29.
The rollout underscores the government’s commitment to reducing vehicular emissions and promoting environmentally friendly transportation across the city.
Strengthening Connectivity and Infrastructure
The Chief Minister also started the Delhi–Rohtak intercity electric bus service, which will improve transportation between cities. The route will go through important places like Peera Garhi, Tikri Border, and Bahadurgarh, making it easier for people who use it every day to get around.
Additionally, the inauguration of new infrastructure facilities is expected to streamline transport operations and support the growing electric fleet.
Push Towards Fully Electric Public Transport
Emphasising the government’s long-term vision, the Chief Minister stated that Delhi is working in “mission mode” to transition its public transport system entirely to electric vehicles. The continued addition of electric buses is seen as a critical step in achieving pollution-free mobility while modernising the city’s transport ecosystem.
Officials also noted that regular upgrades, including new buses and improved depots, are being carried out to enhance service delivery and commuter convenience.
A Step Toward Cleaner Urban Mobility
The Electric Buses project is part of larger efforts for Delhi to reduce air pollution and create a transport system that will last. The city is making itself a leader in clean public transport in India by adding more electric buses to its fleet and improving its infrastructure.
Overall, the move marks a significant milestone in Delhi’s journey toward a greener, more efficient, and future-ready mobility system.
