Epsilon Secures MeitY Approval for Battery Anode Material Project

Epsilon Secures MeitY Approval for Battery Anode Material Project

Epsilon Advanced Materials has secured approval for its Epsilon C2GR anode material project under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS) administered by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. Under the scheme, the project will receive ₹145 crore in capital expenditure support, representing 25% of its total planned investment.

Notably, Epsilon is the only company to receive approval in this tranche of ECMS approvals for manufacturing anode material, a critical component of lithium-ion cells. The approval marks an important step towards establishing a domestic ‘Swadeshi’ supply chain for critical battery materials and reinforces Epsilon’s efforts to develop indigenous technology and manufacturing capabilities in India. The ECMS has so far approved 106 projects across 30 products, representing a total investment of ₹69,548 crore and projected production of ₹5.34 lakh crore.

Epsilon’s project is aimed at building indigenous technology and large-scale manufacturing capability for graphite anode materials in India, supporting the country’s growing requirements across electric mobility, energy storage and digital & consumer electronics.

It has already commissioned India’s first graphite anode material customer qualification plant, EAM-ONE, at Vijayanagar, Karnataka, and is progressing towards commercial-scale manufacturing which gets nod from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India. The company plans to scale its graphite anode capacity to 30,000 tons per annum by 2028 and 100,000 tons in second phase.

On this occasion Vikram Handa, Managing Director, Epsilon Group said “The project approval under ECMS is an important recognition of Epsilon’s efforts to develop indigenous graphite anode technology and manufacturing capabilities in India. Building a resilient battery ecosystem requires ownership of technology, intellectual property, R&D and process know-how. This support will help accelerate our scale-up and strengthen India’s domestic battery materials value chain. We remain committed to contributing to the Government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by building globally competitive critical battery materials from India.”

Indigenous Technology and R&D at the core

Epsilon’s graphite anode material roadmap is built around indigenous technology development, supported by in-house R&D and intellectual property. The company has capabilities spanning material development, process optimisation and electrochemical validation, including testing across coin-cell, pouch-cell and multi-layer pouch-cell formats to develop and customise materials for customer requirements. It has 43 patents filed, covering process, product and equipment technologies, with 50 more intellectual property development planned through 2030.

Epsilon’s graphite anode program is part of Epsilon Group’s broader commitment to developing an integrated and competitive advanced battery materials ecosystem. With its indigenous technology platform, R&D capabilities, growing intellectual property portfolio, customer qualifications in place and planned manufacturing scale-up, it aims to strengthen self-reliant domestic value addition and reduce dependence on imported critical battery materials.

Epsilon Advanced Materials Pvt. Ltd. (EAMPL), established in 2018 is dedicated to developing sustainable and high-performance battery materials i.e. anode & cathode active materials for strengthening the domestic & global battery material supply chain. The company has successfully commissioned India’s 1st Graphite Anode material commercial plant EAM-ONE in Vijayanagar, Karnataka with plans to produce 30,000 tons/annum by 2028 which will scale up to 100,000 tons/annum by 2031.

Epsilon Advanced Materials has made strategic investments globally, including a $650 million investment in North Carolina for graphite anode material facility with 60,000 tons capacity by 2031. EAMPL recently forayed into lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) based Cathode Active Material business through a technology center in Germany shows its commitment to technological advancement in the battery industry. It also plans to build India’s 1st Cathode Active Material manufacturing facility with 20,000 tons by 2028 to scale up-to 100,000 tons/annum by 2035. These initiatives align with its mission to support the global battery industry assnd contribute to sustainable development to Energize the World.
