European Energy has taken the final investment decision (FID) to develop a 225 MW agrivoltaic (agri-PV) solar project near Vizzini in Sicily, Italy. The initiative, first authorised in 2023, pairs elevated solar panels with ongoing agricultural activity, enabling dual land use and supporting both clean energy generation and farming.
The project is designed to align with Italy’s long-term renewable energy goals and broader EU decarbonisation objectives. Once operational, targeted by end of 2027, the Vizzini installation is expected to become the largest solar park in Italy, surpassing previous grid-connected installations and significantly boosting the country’s renewable generation capacity.
European Energy executives emphasised the project’s integrated design, which demonstrates how agricultural use can coexist with utility-scale solar development. The investment decision follows the company’s success in securing a Contract for Difference (CfD) through Italy’s recent FERX auction, providing long-term revenue stability to underpin the project.
This development builds on European Energy’s strong track record in Italy, including earlier utility-scale solar projects such as the Troia solar park, which was connected to the grid in 2022.
