Godawari Power & Ispat Limited (GPIL), through its wholly owned subsidiary Godawari New Energy Private Limited, has received environmental clearance from the State Expert Appraisal Committee-3 (SEAC-3), Maharashtra, for the development of an industrial building for a 20 GWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the AURIC Bidkin Industrial Area in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra.
The clearance marks a key regulatory milestone for GPIL’s planned large-scale energy storage project and allows the company to move forward with the development of the proposed BESS facility.
According to the company update, GPIL had incurred ₹501 crore in capital expenditure toward its BESS project as of June 30, 2026. The company subsequently subscribed to ₹150 crore worth of equity shares in Godawari New Energy through a rights issue on July 3, 2026, taking its total investment in the subsidiary to ₹600 crore.
The 20 GWh BESS project forms part of GPIL’s broader strategy to expand beyond its traditional steel and mining operations into the clean energy and energy storage sector. The company is developing the project through Godawari New Energy, which is focused on its battery energy storage initiatives.
The project is being developed at the AURIC Bidkin Industrial Area, a planned industrial development in Maharashtra. The location is expected to support the company’s expansion of its clean energy infrastructure and related manufacturing activities.
In a related development, GPIL incorporated Godawari Energy Solutions Private Limited on October 1, 2026, as a wholly owned subsidiary. The new entity is intended to undertake engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and operations and maintenance (O&M) activities for clean energy projects.
The move could enable the group to develop internal capabilities for executing and managing clean energy projects as its BESS business expands.
GPIL has also received an offer letter for 31.45 acres of land at the AURIC Bidkin Industrial Area for its downstream Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) project. The land was offered on September 24, 2026.
The developments at AURIC indicate the company’s broader effort to establish multiple industrial and clean energy activities at the location.
The planned 20 GWh facility comes as battery energy storage gains importance in India’s power sector to support renewable energy integration, grid balancing and peak power management.
With the environmental clearance now secured, GPIL can progress toward the next stages of development of its proposed BESS facility. The company has indicated plans to commission the project in the coming period, subject to construction and other project requirements.
The latest clearance strengthens GPIL’s clean energy expansion plans and adds a significant battery storage project to India’s growing utility-scale BESS pipeline.
