Hindustan Zinc Limited has increased the share of renewable energy in its overall electricity consumption to 22%, up from around 18% in FY26, as the Vedanta Group company accelerates its clean energy transition.
The integrated zinc producer aims to source approximately 70% of its total electricity requirements from renewable energy by FY28, supporting its strategy to reduce the environmental footprint of its mining and smelting operations.
To advance this target, Hindustan Zinc has expanded its round-the-clock (RTC) renewable power delivery agreement with Serentica Renewables from 450 MW to 530 MW. The arrangement combines renewable generation and energy storage to provide reliable clean electricity for the company’s operations.
Hindustan Zinc generated 892 million units of green power during FY26, up from 632 million units in FY25. The increase, together with renewable power procurement, has contributed to the growing share of clean energy in the company’s overall power mix.
The company’s renewable energy portfolio includes solar, wind and energy storage solutions, enabling the delivery of reliable renewable power across its operations in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Additional renewable capacity is expected to progressively increase the contribution of clean energy to its electricity consumption.
As part of its energy transition, Hindustan Zinc is also upgrading power connectivity from the state transmission network to the Central Transmission Utility (CTU). The company is implementing in-house initiatives focused on cleaner and more efficient power generation, including improvements to waste heat recovery boiler and steam turbine systems.
Hindustan Zinc is also deploying floating solar installations on water ponds, adding another source of renewable generation to its operations.
Amarendu Prakash, CEO, Hindustan Zinc, said the next phase of growth in metals and mining would depend on producing more metals while progressively lowering the environmental footprint. He added that renewable energy is becoming fundamental to building a more resilient, competitive and responsible business.
With renewable power now accounting for 22% of its electricity consumption, Hindustan Zinc’s target of reaching 70% by FY28 marks a significant step in its strategy to integrate clean energy into large-scale metals production.
