Exide Industries has invested an additional ₹200 crore in its wholly owned subsidiary, Exide Energy Solutions Limited (EESL), taking its cumulative equity investment in the battery manufacturing business to approximately ₹5,102.23 crore.
The latest investment was completed on August 18, 2026, through a rights-based equity subscription. The transaction maintains Exide Industries’ 100% ownership of EESL without any dilution.
The fresh capital is part of Exide’s broader investment programme to develop advanced chemistry battery manufacturing capabilities in India. The company’s board had approved a funding programme of up to ₹1,400 crore for EESL in January 2026.
Focus on Lithium-Ion Cell Manufacturing
EESL is developing a greenfield multi-gigawatt lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility in Bengaluru, which is central to Exide’s strategy to expand beyond its traditional lead-acid battery business and establish a presence in India’s rapidly growing electric vehicle and energy-storage markets.
With the latest infusion, Exide’s cumulative equity investment in EESL has increased from around ₹4,902 crore in July 2026 to ₹5,102.23 crore.
The continued capital allocation reflects Exide’s commitment to funding the development and expansion of its domestic lithium-ion cell manufacturing operations. The project is expected to support increasing demand for locally manufactured battery cells as India accelerates EV adoption and domestic battery value-chain development.
Strong Q1 FY27 Performance
Exide’s investment comes after a strong financial performance in the first quarter of FY27. The company reported consolidated net profit of ₹350 crore, up 28.02% year-on-year from ₹273 crore in Q1 FY26.
Consolidated revenue also increased 17.7% year-on-year to ₹5,528 crore, providing a strong financial backdrop for continued investment in its new-energy business.
EV Battery Localization
India’s push towards greater domestic manufacturing of EV components and battery cells is creating opportunities for established battery manufacturers to build localized supply chains.
Exide Energy Solutions has entered into supply arrangements with automotive manufacturers, including Hyundai and Kia, providing potential demand visibility for its future battery-cell production.
The Bengaluru facility is therefore expected to play an important role in Exide’s transition towards advanced battery technologies and could help the company participate more directly in the country’s expanding EV and energy-storage ecosystem.
As Exide continues to deploy capital into EESL, the pace of plant execution, commissioning and commercial production will remain key factors for the company’s next phase of growth in the lithium-ion battery market.
