HiTHIUM has secured an agreement to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) and long-term technical support to Statkraft for its Montes de Cierzo wind farm in Navarra, northern Spain. The project marks HiTHIUM’s first deployment in the Navarra region and strengthens its presence in the European energy storage market.
Under the agreement, HiTHIUM will provide six Block battery energy storage units, each with a capacity of 5.016 MWh, delivering a combined storage capacity of approximately 30.1 MWh. The project will also include power conversion systems (PCS) supplied by a leading Spanish manufacturer, forming a turnkey solution designed for high-density energy storage and grid-scale applications.
The BESS installation will be integrated with Statkraft’s wind generation assets to improve the utilisation of renewable electricity and provide greater flexibility to the power system. The battery system will support applications including renewable energy output smoothing, frequency regulation and other ancillary services, as well as peak shaving and valley filling.
José Miguel Ferrer Rodriguez, Country Manager for Iberia at Statkraft, said the Montes de Cierzo project represents an important milestone in the company’s energy storage strategy in Spain. By combining battery storage with wind generation, the project is expected to improve renewable energy utilisation, increase grid flexibility and contribute to a more resilient electricity system.

The company said the project also supports Navarra’s clean energy ambitions and demonstrates the potential of combining large-scale battery storage with renewable generation.
HiTHIUM’s Block 5.016 MWh systems feature liquid cooling technology designed to maintain consistent temperature control and stable performance under varying climatic conditions. This is particularly relevant for the project location, where temperatures can exceed 40°C during summer and fall to freezing levels in winter.
The systems use HiTHIUM’s prismatic 314 Ah lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, which are designed for long cycle life and reliable operation. The company said its vertically integrated manufacturing and quality control processes are intended to improve the systems’ operational reliability and durability.
The BESS project forms part of Statkraft’s broader repowering programme at the Montes de Cierzo wind farm in Tudela, Navarra. Originally commissioned in 2000, the wind farm was built to generate electricity for more than 41,000 homes.
The first phase of the repowering programme, completed in spring 2026, replaced 44 older turbines with 10 new turbines. The second phase will add the battery energy storage system while replacing the remaining 41 turbines with four new units.
Despite reducing the total number of turbines, the repowering programme is expected to increase the wind farm’s total capacity from 60 MW to 90 MW. Annual electricity generation is projected to double to approximately 300 GWh.
Statkraft also said that during the first phase of turbine dismantling, nearly all materials were reused or recycled, including nearly 2,000 tonnes of steel, along with aluminium, copper, fibreglass and other components.
The project highlights the growing role of battery storage in enhancing the performance of renewable energy assets. By pairing BESS with wind generation, projects can better manage variable power output, provide grid services and improve the overall value of renewable electricity.
Founded in 2019, HiTHIUM specialises in battery and energy storage system technologies. The company said it surpassed 100 GWh in cumulative lithium-ion energy storage system battery shipments in 2025 and now supplies its products to more than 18 European countries through HiTHIUM Europe.
