Building India’s Battery Manufacturing Backbone: How SEMCO Infratech Is Driving End-to-End Automation for the BESS Era

India’s battery manufacturing ecosystem is rapidly evolving, fuelled by growing investments in electric mobility, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and domestic cell manufacturing. While battery chemistries often dominate the conversation, advanced manufacturing equipment, automation and testing infrastructure remain equally critical for ensuring quality, scalability and cost competitiveness. As manufacturers move towards larger production capacities, integrated automation solutions—from cell assembly to containerized BESS manufacturing—are becoming essential for building globally competitive gigafactories. At India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026, Shweta Kumari, Sub-Editor, The Battery Magazine, spoke with Devendra Upadhyay, Project Manager, SEMCO Infratech Pvt. Ltd., about the company’s turnkey manufacturing capabilities, India’s localisation journey, and how automation is shaping the future of battery manufacturing.

SEMCO Infratech has been actively participating in India Energy Storage Week for several years. How has the event evolved, and what solutions are you showcasing this year?

We have been associated with India Energy Storage Week for nearly six to seven years, and it has grown tremendously over this period. Every edition brings together a larger ecosystem of domestic and international companies, technology providers and industry stakeholders, making it an excellent platform to showcase emerging innovations.

SEMCO Infratech is a turnkey solution provider for lithium-ion battery manufacturing. Our expertise covers the complete journey from cell assembly to battery modules, battery packs and containerized Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

This year, we are showcasing our latest automation solutions for utility-scale battery manufacturing, including AGV-based material handling systems and complete manufacturing lines designed for containerized energy storage solutions. These technologies help manufacturers improve productivity, automation and process efficiency while reducing manual intervention.

Could you tell us more about SEMCO Infratech and the capabilities that distinguish the company within India’s battery manufacturing ecosystem?

SEMCO Infratech was established in 2017 with the objective of providing advanced manufacturing solutions for India’s rapidly growing battery industry.

Initially, we focused on standalone equipment for battery pack manufacturing, particularly for the electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments. Today, our capabilities have expanded significantly.

We now offer complete turnkey manufacturing solutions covering battery cell processing, module assembly, pack assembly, testing systems and containerized Battery Energy Storage System manufacturing.

Whether a customer wants to establish an EV battery pack production line or a utility-scale BESS assembly facility, we provide the complete manufacturing infrastructure—from individual equipment to fully integrated automated production lines.

As battery manufacturing scales across India, how are automation and testing helping manufacturers improve quality and productivity?

Automation has become one of the most important enablers of modern battery manufacturing.

As production volumes increase, manufacturers require highly reliable, repeatable and efficient processes to ensure consistent product quality. Our automation systems help reduce manual operations while improving manufacturing accuracy and production throughput.

In addition to automation, we provide comprehensive testing solutions for battery cells, battery packs and complete containerized systems. These systems allow manufacturers to validate product performance, ensure quality compliance and improve operational reliability before products are deployed in the field.

By combining manufacturing automation with advanced testing, we help customers build safer, more efficient and globally competitive battery manufacturing facilities.

India is strongly promoting localisation under initiatives such as ‘Make in India.’ How is SEMCO contributing to this vision?

Localization has become one of the industry’s highest priorities, and we fully support this national vision.

For many years, advanced battery manufacturing equipment was largely imported. However, both the Government of India and industry are now working towards building indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
At SEMCO, we have invested significantly in local engineering, software development, automation and research to manufacture advanced battery production equipment within India.

Our long-term objective is to provide customers with Made-in-India manufacturing equipment that offers high quality, reliable performance and strong technical support while reducing dependence on imported technologies.

What would you describe as SEMCO Infratech’s biggest strength in today’s competitive market?

Our biggest strength is our ability to deliver complete manufacturing solutions under one roof.

Customers do not need to source equipment from multiple vendors. We provide integrated manufacturing lines, automation systems, testing equipment and technical support as a single solution provider.

Equally important is our focus on after-sales service and customer support. Being an Indian company allows us to respond quickly to customer requirements while building long-term partnerships throughout the lifecycle of their manufacturing facilities.

Our philosophy is simple—support Indian manufacturers with reliable, indigenous technologies backed by strong engineering expertise.

Having participated in IESW for several years, what key industry trends have you observed?

India Energy Storage Week has become one of the country’s most important platforms for the battery and energy storage industry.

Every year, we see increasing participation from international companies alongside a rapidly growing number of Indian manufacturers. It is encouraging to witness Indian companies now producing battery materials, manufacturing equipment, battery packs and containerized energy storage solutions domestically.

The level of technological maturity has improved significantly, and the ecosystem has become much stronger compared to a few years ago.

Events like IESW create valuable opportunities for collaboration between industry, government and technology providers, helping accelerate India’s energy transition.

Looking ahead, what is SEMCO Infratech’s vision for the next five years?

Over the next five years, our primary focus will be on expanding India’s indigenous battery manufacturing capabilities.

We will continue investing in locally developed manufacturing equipment, automation technologies, testing systems and software solutions to support the country’s growing battery ecosystem.

Our vision is that manufacturers across India increasingly choose Made-in-India equipment developed by SEMCO for building world-class battery manufacturing facilities.

We believe India’s battery industry is entering a transformational phase, and we are committed to contributing through innovation, localisation and advanced manufacturing technologies.
