India and Malawi reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation in the energy sector during a high-level meeting held on the sidelines of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
The meeting took place between Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, and Jean Mathanga, Minister of Energy and Mining, Government of Malawi.
Focus on Strengthening Energy Collaboration
Both leaders “reaffirmed the warm and friendly relations between India and Malawi” during their talks. They also stressed how important it is to increase cooperation in the energy sector as part of their larger development partnership. Renewable Energy and Capacity Building in Focus
The two sides “talked about developments in their own energy sectors” and talked about working together in a number of areas. These included making progress on capacity-building projects, developing renewable energy, making electricity more accessible, and improving planning in the power sector.
In addition, both countries recognized Malawi’s participation in the International Solar Alliance, which was launched by India and France in 2015 to promote solar energy deployment worldwide.
Continued Engagement and Future Cooperation
The ministers “expressed their shared interest in exploring avenues for cooperation in areas of mutual interest in the energy sector” and agreed to sustain momentum through continued institutional and technical exchanges.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides highlighting that it was held in a “cordial and constructive atmosphere” and reflected their “shared commitment… to further strengthen bilateral relations.”
