Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik led the Indian delegation to Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2026, held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore from October 26 to 28. The visit included discussions on battery storage investments and energy cooperation with Singapore, along with a visit to Sembcorp’s 326 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) facility on Jurong Island.
The summit coincided with the 25th anniversary of Singapore’s Energy Market Authority and featured the Singapore-International Energy Agency (IEA) Forum, the Singapore-International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Forum and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Naik delivered a keynote address on the first day and opening remarks on the second day.
India Highlights Renewable Energy and Power Sector Progress
During the summit, Naik highlighted India’s progress in expanding electricity generation capacity and renewable energy deployment. As of September 30, 2026, India’s installed electricity capacity stood at 558.9 GW, of which approximately 308 GW, or 55%, came from non-fossil fuel sources.
India achieved 50% non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity capacity in June 2025, five years ahead of its 2030 Nationally Determined Contribution target. The country is now working towards its target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
Naik also outlined progress under key renewable energy programmes. Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, approximately 53 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed, benefiting around 63 lakh households.
Under PM-KUSUM, nearly 12 lakh standalone solar pumps had been installed, while more than 17 lakh grid-connected agricultural pumps had been solarised. These installations have added approximately 16.7 GW of decentralised renewable energy capacity and benefited around 30 lakh farmers.
India and Singapore Discuss Battery Storage Investments
During a bilateral meeting with Gan Siow Huang, Singapore’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Energy and Trade and Industry, both sides discussed energy cooperation under the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The discussions covered a proposed cross-border electricity interconnection between the two countries. Naik also invited long-term Singaporean investment in India’s transmission infrastructure, pumped storage projects, battery energy storage and renewable energy sector.
Other areas of discussion included green hydrogen and ammonia, energy efficiency, and partnerships between Indian power equipment manufacturers and Singaporean utilities.
Cooperation with Bhutan on Hydropower and Transmission
Naik met Lyonpo Sonam Tashi, Bhutan’s Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, to review ongoing energy cooperation between the two countries.
The discussions covered progress on the 1,200 MW Punatsangchhu-I Hydroelectric Project, where dam construction resumed in April 2026, and the operational performance of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II project.
Both sides also discussed other hydropower projects being considered in partnership with Indian entities and cross-border transmission planning through 2040.
Discussions with IRENA and IEA
Naik met Francesco La Camera, Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency, to discuss strengthening cooperation under the strategic partnership agreement signed between India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and IRENA in January 2022.
The discussions focused on affordable renewable energy financing for developing economies, long-term energy planning, green hydrogen and capacity building, including in the ASEAN region.
He also met Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency. The discussions included the forthcoming launch of the IEA’s India Renewable Energy Market Report 2026 at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and its India Critical Minerals Report at India Mining Week.
Visit to Sembcorp’s 326 MWh Battery Storage Facility
As part of the visit, Naik toured Sembcorp’s 326 MWh battery energy storage system on Jurong Island. The facility comprises 800 large-scale lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and is identified as the largest utility-scale battery energy storage system in Singapore and Southeast Asia.
The visit highlighted the role of large-scale battery storage in supporting electricity systems and integrating renewable energy. Battery storage facilities can store electricity and discharge it when required, helping manage variations in power demand and renewable energy generation.
The delegation also visited Keppel’s 22 MW waste-to-energy plant in the Tuas region, which has a processing capacity of 800 tonnes per day.
The visit to Singapore International Energy Week 2026 provided a platform for India to present its progress in the power and renewable energy sectors while advancing discussions on energy storage, cross-border electricity connectivity and international cooperation.
