JSW Energy Limited has commissioned its first green hydrogen manufacturing facility at Vijayanagar, Karnataka, marking a major milestone for India’s clean-energy transition. The plant, located adjacent to the JSW Steel Limited DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) unit, will supply low-carbon hydrogen to support steel manufacturing.
Under a seven-year offtake agreement with JSW Steel, the new facility will deliver 3,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen along with 30,000 TPA of green oxygen. This output forms a portion of JSW Energy’s allocated capacity of 6,800 TPA under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme managed by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI).
The facility has been established under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme Tranche I as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reflecting the government’s push to scale green hydrogen manufacturing in India.
In parallel, JSW Energy has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with JSW Steel to gradually ramp up supply to 85,000-90,000 TPA of green hydrogen and 720,000 TPA of green oxygen by 2030.
Commenting on the development, Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and CEO of JSW Energy, said the commissioning “reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel.”
With this project, JSW Energy advances its broader clean-energy goals. The company currently holds a locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW and energy storage capacity of 29.4 GWh. It targets 30 GW generation and 40 GWh storage by FY2030 and aims for carbon-neutrality by 2050.
