Lucknow has become the leading district in India for rooftop solar installations, overtaking Surat, as per official data released up to April 15. The installations have been carried out under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a central government initiative aimed at promoting residential solar power generation across the country.
Record Installations and Steady Growth
According to the Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), a total of 3,133 rooftop solar plants were installed in Lucknow between January and April 15. With this addition, the cumulative number of installations in the district has crossed 87,000 systems, the highest among all districts nationwide.
The data for January to April shows that more and more people in the state capital are using solar energy, which shows that more and more people are interested in clean, cheap energy options.
Key Highlights:
- 3,133 rooftop solar systems installed (Jan–April 15)
- Total installations exceed 87,000 in Lucknow
- Highest rooftop solar adoption among all districts in India
- Installations driven under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
- Lucknow surpasses Surat in total installations
Urban Energy Demand Driving Adoption
Officials say that the increase in installations is because urban households are using more electricity. More people using electrical appliances, induction cooktops, and electric cars has greatly increased the need for reliable and cheap energy.
At the same time, rising electricity tariffs and growing awareness about renewable energy have encouraged more households to adopt rooftop solar systems as a long-term solution.
Government Support and Simplified Processes
Policy support has played a key role in accelerating adoption. Subsidies from both central and state governments, along with a simplified application and approval process, have made installations more accessible.
“The availability of subsidies from both the central and state govts, along with a simplified application and approval process, has facilitated faster adoption of rooftop solar systems. Coordination between discoms and implementing agencies has further streamlined installations,” said an official.
Benchmark for Other Districts
Officials noted that Lucknow’s performance is now being closely monitored as a benchmark for other districts. Its success highlights the impact of strong policy support, effective coordination, and increasing consumer awareness in driving large-scale adoption of rooftop solar systems.
The development positions Lucknow at the forefront of India’s residential solar transition, reinforcing the role of distributed renewable energy in meeting rising urban power demand.
