The Municipal Corporation Ludhiana has issued a tender to set up 50 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the city under a 10-year public-private partnership (PPP) model, aiming to strengthen green energy infrastructure and accelerate the shift toward sustainable urban mobility.
Expanding EV Charging Access in Ludhiana
Officials have pointed out the growing need for charging infrastructure in Ludhiana, a major industrial center, where electric vehicles (EVs) now make up about 6% of all vehicle registrations. The planned 50 stations will let electric two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and passenger cars charge up. This will help ease range anxiety and get more people and fleet operators to switch to electric vehicles.
The project is expected to enhance urban EV adoption by offering structured and accessible charging networks. “This initiative is a significant step toward sustainable urban transportation and will provide residents and businesses with reliable EV charging options,” said Raman Kaushal, Executive Engineer, Municipal Corporation Ludhiana.
Public-Private Collaboration and Revenue Model
The tender asks infrastructure developers and charge point operators to plan, build, and run the stations. The local government will give land for the stations and work with local power companies to make sure that the electricity never goes out.
Each site will feature AC and DC chargers, battery-swapping points, RFID or QR-based authentication, mobile app connectivity, digital payments, weatherproof infrastructure, fire safety measures, CCTV surveillance, and waterlogging-resistant drainage systems.
Under the proposed user-pays revenue model, the municipal corporation will earn a minimum of ₹1 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of energy dispensed, in addition to a 50-50 share of advertising and branding revenue generated at the charging hubs.
“The PPP model allows private players to bring technical expertise while ensuring the city benefits from a sustainable revenue framework,” Kaushal added.
Driving Sustainable Urban Mobility
Ludhiana wants to help with national electrification and sustainability goals by building this large-scale EV infrastructure. They also want to make it easy for people to use EVs on their daily commutes. Officials said that the project will also serve as a model for other cities that want to build more EV charging stations, which will help more people use electric cars in more places.
“The tender for 50 EV charging stations positions Ludhiana as a forward-looking city, ready to embrace clean, efficient, and future-ready transportation solutions,” Kaushal emphasized.
This project shows that Ludhiana is committed to a greener, more sustainable urban mobility ecosystem. It does this by combining public oversight with private sector innovation to meet the needs of EV users as they grow.
