In a major move to strengthen clean energy infrastructure, the Government of Maharashtra has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth ₹10,217 crore for the development of a 2,100 MW pumped storage hydropower project. The agreement was signed between the state’s Water Resources Department and Chambery Power Private Limited, a group company of EDF Power Solutions India Private Limited.
The MoU signing ceremony took place in the presence of Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The project will be implemented under the state government’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) policy framework.
Project to be Developed in Pune and Raigad
The proposed Pimpalpada–Savale Pumped Storage Project will be developed across the districts of Pune and Raigad. Pumped storage hydropower projects play an important role in balancing electricity supply by storing surplus power during low demand periods and releasing it during peak demand hours.
The project is expected to cost about ₹10,217 crore and create about 2,500 jobs during both the development and operational phases.
Once it is up and running, the facility is expected to increase the amount of energy that can be stored and help keep the electricity supply stable as demand for power grows.
Part of Maharashtra’s Larger Pumped Storage Plan
The Pimpalpada–Savale project forms part of a broader strategy by the Maharashtra government to expand pumped storage capacity across the state.
Currently, 55 pumped storage projects have been proposed with a combined generation capacity of 78,215 MW. These projects are expected to attract investments worth about ₹4.17 lakh crore and generate employment opportunities for nearly 1.28 lakh people.
According to government estimates, the projects could also generate approximately ₹1,762.21 crore in revenue through industrial tariffs, along with around ₹128.32 crore annually through replenishment charges.
Supporting India’s Clean Energy Transition
Pumped storage hydropower is increasingly being recognised as a key technology for supporting the integration of renewable energy and ensuring reliable grid operations.
Maharashtra wants to improve its energy storage infrastructure and help the state’s long-term goals for renewable energy and power reliability with the Pimpalpada–Savale project. The program is also expected to help the economy grow in the area by creating jobs and making big investments in infrastructure.
Senior leaders including Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil and Girish Mahajan were also present at the MoU signing ceremony, along with Guirec Servan, CEO of EDF Power Solutions India Pvt. Ltd., and other government officials and company representatives.
