Waaree Energies Ltd, one of India’s leading solar module manufacturers, has announced the commissioning of a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) container manufacturing facility through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions (Waaree ESS). The new plant has an annual manufacturing capacity of 5.15 GWh, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion into the energy storage sector.
The newly operational facility represents the first major milestone in Waaree’s long-term plan to establish 20 GWh of energy storage manufacturing capacity in India.
The company said the project is aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities while supporting the country’s rapidly growing demand for battery energy storage solutions.
Initially planned with a production capacity of 3.5 GWh, the facility’s capacity has been increased to 5.15 GWh through production debottlenecking and improvements in the energy density of battery cells. These upgrades have enabled the company to enhance output without compromising manufacturing efficiency.
The plant is equipped with advanced manufacturing technologies designed to improve productivity and ensure high-quality production standards. It features automated assembly lines, Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for material handling, and Industry 4.0 technologies, including smart manufacturing systems that enable real-time monitoring, automation, and process optimisation. These technologies are expected to improve operational efficiency while maintaining consistency in product quality.
Battery Energy Storage Systems play a crucial role in modern power systems by storing electricity generated from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. They help balance electricity supply and demand, improve grid reliability, and ensure uninterrupted power availability during periods of low renewable energy generation or peak demand. As India continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, the demand for reliable and large-scale energy storage solutions is expected to increase significantly.
Waaree said the commissioning of the BESS container manufacturing facility is only the beginning of its broader energy storage strategy. Later in the current financial year, the company plans to commission a 5.15 GWh battery pack manufacturing facility as well as a 3.5 GWh lithium cell manufacturing plant. Once operational, these facilities will create an integrated domestic energy storage manufacturing ecosystem, covering key stages of the battery value chain.
By manufacturing battery containers, battery packs, and lithium cells within the country, Waaree aims to strengthen India’s self-reliance in advanced energy storage technologies. The company believes that domestic manufacturing will help reduce dependence on imported battery technologies and components while supporting the government’s push for localisation under initiatives such as “Make in India.”
The investments also align with India’s ambitious clean energy targets, which require large-scale deployment of battery energy storage systems to integrate renewable power into the national grid. As renewable energy installations continue to rise, energy storage is becoming an essential component for ensuring grid stability and enhancing the reliability of electricity supply.
With the launch of the new 5.15 GWh BESS container manufacturing facility and additional manufacturing plants planned for later this year, Waaree Energies is expanding its presence beyond solar manufacturing and positioning itself as a key player in India’s fast-growing energy storage industry. The company expects these investments to support the country’s clean energy transition while contributing to the development of a robust domestic battery manufacturing ecosystem.
