The first commercial rollout of CATL’s sodium-ion storage technology in the region will take place throughout Europe with the deployment of 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems by Dutch energy solutions provider Alfen NV and Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (SHE:300750), better known as CATL.
CATL’s TENER Sodium battery energy storage system, which the company claims has a 25-year design life and increases round-trip efficiency by about 2%, will be used in the deployment to lower the total cost of ownership. The cooperation, which started in 2023 when the firms signed a long-term battery supply agreement centred on lithium-ion storage devices, is expanded upon by this agreement. To assist Alfen’s expanding energy storage company in Europe, they increased their collaboration in 2024.
The goal of the new partnership is to hasten the commercialization of sodium-ion battery technology in the European market for energy storage. Because they can lessen reliance on lithium for stationary energy storage applications and rely on more plentiful raw materials, sodium-ion batteries are gaining popularity. The partnership will allow CATL to gain local experience in deploying sodium-ion batteries within European power grids and help the company optimise the technology for regional grid requirements and support the wider commercial rollout of sodium-ion energy storage systems.
The TENER Sodium energy storage system was formally presented by CATL in June, and the company stated that it anticipates total sales of 1 GWh by the end of 2026. While international shipments are anticipated to commence a year later, deliveries to clients in China are planned to start in September.
The Dutch energy solutions company Alfen NV and Chinese battery manufacturer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (SHE:300750), also known as CATL, have reached an agreement to install 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems throughout Europe. This will be the first commercial rollout of CATL’s sodium-ion storage technology in the region.
