NHPC Limited has strengthened its commitment to sustainable development in the Ladakh region through a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Development (SD) initiative. Its Chutak Power Station has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the District Administration Kargil on 25 March 2026. The agreement aims to enhance healthcare access, improve educational infrastructure, and create livelihood opportunities for local communities in remote areas.
The initiative reflects NHPC’s broader vision of integrating community welfare with its operational activities while supporting inclusive regional growth.
Healthcare Infrastructure Boost for Remote Areas
As part of the agreement, NHPC will support healthcare accessibility by deploying two ambulances to strengthen emergency medical response services in Kargil. The allocation includes:
- One ambulance for PHE Tiket
- One ambulance for PHE Sangrah
This step should make emergency response times a lot faster and give people in remote and underserved areas better access to healthcare.
Livelihood Promotion and Women Empowerment
A key component of the MoU focuses on empowering women and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) by facilitating income-generating activities. The support package includes the provision of:
- Tailoring machines
- Wool processing units
- Apricot oil extraction machinery
These resources are intended to encourage women-led entrepreneurship, promote self-reliance, and generate sustainable livelihood opportunities across local communities.
Education Infrastructure Development
The deal also says that NHPC will make improvements to the infrastructure at Government Middle School in Chutuk. The planned improvements include building and improving things like wooden panelling and flooring to make the learning environment better for students.
Institutional Participation and Investment Value
The MoU, valued at ₹36.25 lakh, was formalized in the presence of senior officials from NHPC and the District Administration Kargil. The signing ceremony included participation from the Deputy Commissioner of Kargil, along with senior representatives from NHPC’s Chutak Power Station.
The initiative shows that NHPC is still working to improve social infrastructure in addition to its energy operations in remote and strategically important areas.
