Onward Solar Power has signed a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with GRIDCO Limited for the development of a 45 MW/180 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Odisha. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening the state’s energy storage infrastructure and supporting the integration of renewable energy into the power grid.

The project forms part of the 125 MW/500 MWh standalone BESS programme being implemented in Odisha through the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The initiative is backed by the Ministry of Power’s Viability Gap Funding (VGF) scheme, which aims to accelerate the deployment of large-scale battery storage projects across the country.

Onward Solar secured the project through a competitive bidding process conducted by SECI. Under the agreement, the company will develop, own, and operate the battery storage facility and provide energy storage services to GRIDCO. The system will be capable of storing electricity during periods of low demand and supplying power back to the grid during peak demand hours, helping improve grid flexibility and reliability.

Battery energy storage systems are increasingly becoming a critical component of India’s energy transition strategy. As the country rapidly expands its solar and wind power capacity, storage solutions are essential for managing the intermittent nature of renewable energy and ensuring a stable power supply. The Odisha project is expected to support better utilization of renewable energy resources while enhancing grid stability and reducing dependence on conventional power sources during peak periods.

The BESPA signing highlights Odisha’s commitment to building a modern and resilient power infrastructure capable of accommodating higher levels of clean energy generation. For Onward Solar, the project represents an important milestone in its growing presence in the energy storage sector and reinforces its role in supporting India’s decarbonization goals.

Once commissioned, the 45 MW/180 MWh BESS facility will contribute to a more reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity network, supporting both Odisha’s energy needs and the country’s broader clean energy ambitions.
