PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a major national milestone, with more than 25 lakh households across India now powered by rooftop solar systems. The development marks a significant acceleration in residential clean energy adoption, delivering measurable savings, reliable power, and increased energy self-reliance at the household level.
According to official data, over 7.7 lakh families are already experiencing zero electricity bills under the scheme. This has been supported by ₹13,926 crore in subsidy assistance and more than 8.3 lakh sanctioned loan applications, highlighting the scale of financial backing provided to households adopting rooftop solar solutions. The scheme is increasingly being described as a nationwide people’s movement, driven by strong participation from urban and semi-urban regions.
Launched with the objective of covering one crore residential households by FY 2026–27, PM Surya Ghar is rapidly translating policy intent into on-ground impact. Rooftop solar installations under the programme are expanding steadily, enabling families to generate their own clean electricity while reducing dependence on conventional grid power.
A key factor behind the scheme’s progress is its consumer-friendly design. The programme features a fully digital application process, ensuring ease of access and transparency for beneficiaries. Subsidies are transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, eliminating intermediaries and delays. In addition, the scheme offers collateral-free loans at a concessional interest rate of 5.75 per cent, calculated as the repo rate plus 0.50 basis points, making rooftop solar installations financially viable for a wider segment of households. Simplified regulatory approvals have further reduced adoption barriers.
Beyond numerical achievements, the scheme is delivering broader socioeconomic and environmental benefits. Households are receiving tangible financial relief through reduced or eliminated power bills, while gaining greater control over their energy needs. The programme is also accelerating the shift toward clean and renewable energy, supporting India’s long-term climate and sustainability goals.
For stakeholders across the energy, finance, sustainability, and public policy sectors, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is emerging as a notable example of how citizen-centric reforms, digital governance, and institutional support can enable large-scale energy transitions.
With rooftop solar adoption gaining momentum, the initiative is no longer a future ambition but an active driver of energy self-reliance and affordable power for millions of Indian households nationwide.
