Tata Power appoints Sanjay Banga as MD and CEO

In a strategic leadership transition, Tata Power has appointed Sanjay Banga as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), effective 1 June 2025. Banga, who currently heads Tata Power’s Transmission & Distribution (T&D) vertical, will take over from Deepesh Nanda, who is stepping down due to personal commitments.

The announcement, made under Regulation 30 of SEBI (LODR) Regulations, 2015, marks a pivotal moment in Tata Power’s renewable energy journey. Banga has also been redesignated as President – Renewables, reflecting the company’s internal realignment to bolster its green energy focus.

With nearly three decades of experience in the power and utilities sector, Banga has overseen operations in Mumbai, Delhi, Ajmer, and Powerlinks Transmission. Sanjay Banga previously served as CEO of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd. (Tata Power-DDL), a joint venture with the Delhi Government. His expertise spans operational technologies, project execution, regulatory frameworks, and business process re-engineering—capabilities that are set to accelerate Tata Power’s clean energy ambitions.

Sanjay Banga expressed readiness to take on the new responsibility, stating:

“I am honored to lead Tata Power Renewable Energy at this crucial juncture. With India’s ambitious decarbonisation targets and global shifts toward sustainable energy, we have an incredible opportunity to redefine the future of power.”

Under Banga’s leadership, TPREL is expected to scale up its solar and wind portfolios, expand energy storage solutions, and push forward on distributed energy initiatives, reinforcing its position as a key player in India’s clean energy transition.

Deepesh Nanda will be relieved from his duties at the close of business on 31 May 2025. While Tata Power has not yet announced Banga’s successor in the T&D vertical, the move highlights the company’s robust succession planning and commitment to leadership continuity.

As the renewable energy market in India braces for exponential growth, Tata Power’s bold leadership pivot underscores its intent to stay ahead in the green race—with Banga at the helm to steer its vision into reality.
