Sarawak is planning to increase financial support for residential rooftop solar installations to up to RM15,000 per household, with detailed guidelines expected to be announced in mid-October 2026.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the proposed increase on October 3 during the Program Sarawakku Sayang in Mukah.
The move is aimed at addressing the high upfront cost of rooftop solar systems and encouraging greater adoption of renewable energy among households.
Currently, Sarawak provides subsidies of between RM8,000 and RM12,000 for residential solar installations, depending on system size. The proposed RM15,000 subsidy would increase the existing level of financial assistance.
Under the current Net Energy Metering (NEM) arrangement, households use solar power generated on their rooftops to meet their electricity demand, while surplus electricity can be exported to the grid and credited against their electricity bills through Sarawak Energy’s subsidiary, SESCo.
It remains unclear whether the proposed higher subsidy will be incorporated into the existing NEM programme or introduced under a separate residential solar scheme. The state government is expected to provide further details when it releases the implementation guidelines later this month.
Sarawak Energy allocated RM10.24 million for residential solar subsidies in 2026, with support provided on a first-come, first-served basis. More than 800 applications had been submitted by May 2026, while 174 residential solar installations had been completed.
The proposed increase in financial assistance is expected to reduce the initial cost burden for homeowners and support wider adoption of rooftop solar across Sarawak. The initiative forms part of the state’s broader efforts to expand renewable energy use and advance its energy transition.
