A high-level delegation led by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), including representatives from PSUs, private sector developers, and EPC contractors, visited Bhutan to explore opportunities for collaboration in renewable energy development. The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral ties and support Bhutan’s renewable energy goals.
Engagement with Bhutan Government and Stakeholders
The SECI delegation talked to important people, such as the Honourable Energy Minister of the Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB), the Director General of the Department of Energy, senior members of the Bhutan Industry Chamber of Commerce, the Ambassador of India to Bhutan, and other interested parties.
Discussions centered on Bhutan’s ambition to achieve 5 GW of solar capacity by 2040 and its plans for large-scale infrastructure development. SECI highlighted potential opportunities under the existing MNRE-RGoB Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), including joint ventures and partnerships for green energy projects.
Presentation on India’s Renewable Energy Landscape
The group, led by Shri Sivakumar V Vepakomma, Director (Power Systems), gave an overview of India’s progress in renewable energy and SECI’s role in promoting growth that doesn’t add to carbon emissions. The team stressed how India’s experience with renewable energy could help Bhutan reach its sustainability goals while also improving energy security and the economy in the region.
This engagement is intended to translate strong bilateral relations into actionable partnerships, facilitating knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and joint development of scalable renewable energy solutions.
Commitment to Sustainable Energy Development
SECI reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Royal Government of Bhutan to implement innovative, scalable, and green energy solutions. The collaboration is expected to contribute to Bhutan’s clean energy transition, enhance regional energy cooperation, and support long-term sustainable growth for both countries.
This project shows how India and Bhutan are working together more and more to find long-term energy solutions in South Asia.
