Sunsure Energy has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Evonith Steel to supply 30 MWp of solar power to the steelmaker’s integrated manufacturing operations in Wardha, Maharashtra. The power supply is scheduled to begin in October 2026, using capacity from Sunsure Energy’s operational 120 MWp solar facility in Dhule. The arrangement is expected to help Evonith Steel reduce its dependence on conventional electricity and offset an estimated 34,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions annually.
Power Supply from an Existing Solar Facility
The agreement uses capacity from an already operational solar project rather than depending on the development and commissioning of a new plant for this supply arrangement. This is expected to allow Evonith Steel to begin integrating renewable electricity into its manufacturing operations within weeks of signing the agreement.
For energy-intensive industries such as steel, electricity is a significant part of operational requirements. Procuring renewable power through long-term PPAs can help industrial consumers increase their use of cleaner electricity while supporting their emissions-reduction objectives. The arrangement also illustrates how existing renewable energy assets can serve additional commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers.
Jai Saraf, Chairman of Evonith Steel and Founder and CEO of Nithia Capital, said the partnership would help the company incorporate renewable power into its operations as it responds to rising demand for steel. He described the move as part of the company’s broader effort to reduce the carbon intensity of manufacturing and improve operational efficiency.
Shashank Sharma, Founder, Chairman and CEO of Sunsure Energy, said the agreement reflected a shift in the C&I market towards renewable energy solutions tailored to individual customers. He also highlighted the importance of reducing emissions from steel manufacturing as India expands its industrial base.
Sunsure Expands Its Industrial Renewable Energy Business
Founded in 2014, Sunsure Energy develops renewable energy solutions for businesses and utilities through long-term power agreements and a portfolio spanning solar, wind and battery energy storage. According to the company, its operating and contracted capacity stands at 2.5 GW, with another 8.3 GW under development and construction. It aims to reach 10 GW of operational capacity by 2030 and is backed by Partners Group, which has committed US$400 million in equity.
The company has continued to add industrial customers through renewable energy agreements. In September 2026, it signed a 20 MW hybrid PPA with Kajaria Ceramics to supply round-the-clock renewable power in Rajasthan, combining 10 MW of solar and 10 MW of wind capacity.
Supporting Steel Sector Decarbonisation
Evonith Steel operates an integrated steel complex in Wardha, Maharashtra, producing hot metal and value-added flat steel products. As manufacturers seek to reduce the environmental impact of production, renewable electricity procurement is emerging as one route to lower the emissions associated with industrial operations.
The Sunsure Energy –Evonith agreement adds to the growing use of long-term renewable power contracts by Indian industrial consumers. Its expected annual emissions reduction of 34,700 tonnes of CO₂e is an estimate associated with the arrangement, rather than a verified reduction already achieved. The actual impact will depend on power supplied and the emissions baseline used.
