CATL has become the only battery company globally to have its battery passports published across all three pilot waves of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) Battery Passport programme. The achievement follows its participation in the 2026 pilot, highlighting the company’s continued engagement in advancing sustainability, transparency and accountability across the global battery value chain.
The GBA Battery Passport pilot program aims to establish a standardized methodology to monitor, quantify and verify the ESG performance of batteries throughout their lifecycle. By providing a common framework for sustainability data and disclosure, the initiative helps address the growing need for greater transparency and accountability across the global new energy value chain.
The 2026 pilot program included cell manufacturers representing nearly 80% of global production capacity. In the pilot assessment, CATL’s battery product delivered strong performance across the full process. It achieved comprehensive ESG data coverage across the entire value chain, from mining, refining and materials to cells and battery packs.
“The GBA Battery Passport pilot program provides an effective methodology for the industry to monitor, quantify and demonstrate ESG performance across the battery value chain,” said Dennis Pan, Head of Sustainable Development at CATL. “It helps the industry better prepare for future sustainability risks and challenges.”
“CATL has been a committed participant in the GBA Battery Passport initiative from the very beginning, helping us translate an ambitious vision into a practical framework for greater transparency and accountability across global battery value chains,” said Inga Petersen, Executive Director of the Global Battery Alliance. “As we prepare to make the GBA Battery Passport certification scheme fully available in early 2027, we are moving from operational trials to full-scale implementation. We look forward to CATL’s continued leadership in this next phase, helping demonstrate how verified sustainability performance can become a meaningful differentiator in global battery markets.”
CATL’s participation in the Battery Passport program dates back to January 2023, when GBA published the world’s first Battery Passport proof of concept. In the second pilot wave, CATL applied for separate battery passports for its Shenxing battery and CTP battery, becoming one of the first companies to publicly release pilot results validated by an independent third party.
As the only battery company with TWh-scale shipments to achieve carbon neutrality across its core operations, CATL has reached its 2025 milestone as scheduled and is now advancing toward its 2035 goal of full value-chain carbon neutrality.
Looking ahead, CATL will continue to work with global partners to support the development and implementation of sustainability standards for the new energy industry.
