Syensqo and Axens have announced the formation of Argylium, a new company dedicated to the development and scale-up of advanced materials for solid-state batteries in Europe. The initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening Europe’s technological leadership and innovation in next-generation battery solutions.
Solid-state batteries are widely regarded as a key enabler for the future of electric mobility and energy storage. By replacing conventional liquid electrolytes with solid materials, these batteries offer enhanced safety, higher energy density, and the potential for faster charging, addressing critical challenges in current battery technologies.
Argylium will build on Syensqo’s extensive experience in solid-state battery development, including the successful operation of a solid-state battery pilot line in La Rochelle and more than a decade of research conducted at its advanced laboratory in Aubervilliers, Paris. The new company will focus on accelerating the industrialization of next-generation sulfide solid electrolyte materials, a core component for all-solid-state batteries (ASSB).
The collaboration combines complementary strengths from multiple partners. Syensqo contributes its expertise in advanced materials, while Axens Group brings decades of experience in process design, industrial scale-up, and the global operation of inorganic chemistry plants. The partnership is further strengthened by IFP Energies nouvelles (IFPEN), which adds its recognized capabilities in inorganic chemistry and oxide and sulfide materials through its Lyon research center.
Commenting on the development, Thomas Canova, Head of Research and Innovation at Syensqo, said, “The creation of Argylium represents an important step forward in bringing solid-state battery materials to market readiness. By joining forces with Axens and IFPEN, we are enhancing the chances of successfully scaling up Syensqo’s pilot innovations and contributing to advance Europe’s electrification and energy storage ambitions.”
Fabrice Bertoncini, Executive Vice President for New Development and Transformation at Axens Group, highlighted the strategic significance of the partnership, stating, “With over 50 years experience in scaling up technologies to the commercial levels, in partnership with IFPEN and aligned with our strategy to develop industrial assets in Europe for the production of advanced battery materials for cathodes and recycling of black mass, our association with Syensqo aims to lay the groundwork and build a robust ecosystem for the commercialization of solid electrolytes by 2030.”
Argylium will actively collaborate with leading European research institutions, automotive original equipment manufacturers, advanced battery producers, and energy technology partners. These collaborations are intended to accelerate innovation, enhance market readiness, and support Europe’s ambition to establish a sustainable and globally competitive solid-state battery industry.
