The International Conference on Carbon Markets – Prakriti 2026, a flagship initiative of the Government of India, commenced in New Delhi. Organized by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency under the patronage of the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the conference is being held as part of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026.
Focus on Carbon Markets and Climate Action
The conference gives top experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and researchers from around the world a chance to talk about how carbon markets are changing, what role they play in fighting climate change, and how India can grow its green economy.
The theme for this year, “Unlocking Carbon Finance for NDC Implementation through Global Partnerships and Digital Pathways,” shows how hard India is working to get climate finance moving, improve international cooperation, and take advantage of digital innovation.
Launch of Indian Carbon Market Portal
During the inaugural session, the Indian Carbon Market Portal was launched by Manohar Lal Khattar, Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, along with Shripad Naik and other dignitaries. The platform will serve as a central mechanism for implementing and administering India’s carbon market.
Government’s Vision and Statements
In his address, Shri Manohar Lal stated, “India has demonstrated that climate responsibility and economic development can go hand in hand.”
He highlighted that through initiatives such as the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), renewable energy expansion, and energy efficiency programmes, India is building a transparent and credible carbon market framework.
He also said that nine methods have already been reported, with more than 40 organisations registered in fields like biogas, hydrogen, and forestry. Also, emission goals have been set for almost 490 obligated entities to make sure that the reductions are real and can be checked. He also told businesses to look at carbon markets as chances to come up with new ideas, put money into them, and grow in a way that is good for the environment.
Three Pillars of Carbon Markets
Shri Shripad Naik stressed the importance of three main pillars credibility, capital, and collaboration for building strong carbon markets. He stressed how important it is to have digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, to put money into clean technologies like renewables and green hydrogen, and to work together as a world under the Paris Agreement.
Conference Sessions and Outlook
The two-day conference features discussions on global carbon markets, compliance frameworks, digital MRV technologies, carbon border policies, and climate finance. It also explores integrating sectors like buildings and cooling into India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and empowering farmers.
Prakriti 2026 strengthens India’s position as a global leader in climate action, making it a trusted center for sustainable solutions and a key player in the shift to a low-carbon future.
