In a significant step towards sustainable tourism and environmental preservation, the Uttarakhand government has announced the installation of 38 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along the Char Dham Yatra route. The initiative aims to promote a Green Yatra this pilgrimage season, reducing pollution in the ecologically sensitive Himalayan region.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami emphasized the state’s commitment to making the Char Dham Yatra an eco-friendly journey.
“In line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this year the target has been set to organise the Char Dham Yatra as a green journey,” said CM Dhami.
Out of the total 38 EV stations, 28 are being operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Department, and the remaining 10 are managed by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited (THDC).
The Chief Minister added,
“As part of this initiative, 38 EV charging stations are being developed in collaboration with the Transport Department (28 stations) and THDC (10 stations).”
Currently, 25 charging stations have already been installed at the beginning of the Yatra route, reinforcing the state’s proactive approach. Each of these stations is equipped with universal 60 kW chargers, featuring two 30 kW charging guns, ensuring compatibility and speed for EV users.
Most of the EV stations have been strategically placed on properties owned by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN).
GMVN Managing Director Vishal Mishra noted,
“E-charging stations have been established at key halts along the route to promote a Green Char Dham Yatra and encourage travelers to opt for electric vehicles.”
In the Rudraprayag district, for example, EV charging stations have been installed at four GMVN guest houses managed by the tourism department.
The Char Dham Yatra is already underway and is expected to continue until November, depending on weather conditions. This sustainable initiative not only aligns with the national PM E-Drive Revolution but also supports localization norms and sets an example for green tourism across India.
