VinFast is preparing to enter India’s rapidly expanding electric two-wheeler segment in the financial year 2027, marking its first foray into the country’s high-volume EV market. The company plans to introduce three battery-swapping electric scooters VinFast Evo, VinFast Feliz II, and VinFast Viper which are currently available in Vietnam.
As part of its initial strategy, these models will be brought into India as completely knocked-down (CKD) units and assembled locally at VinFast’s manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu. This approach is expected to enable quicker market entry while allowing the company to gradually increase localisation over time.
“VinFast plans to introduce battery-swapping models such as the VinFast Evo, VinFast Feliz II, and VinFast Viper, along with additional new models to be launched over time. All products will be tailored to suit local usage conditions and mobility habits in each market,” the company said in response to a query.
The scooters are equipped with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and feature dual battery compartments under the seat, each with a capacity of 1.5 kWh. In Vietnam, customers have the option to either purchase the vehicle with batteries or opt for battery rental services.
In terms of performance, the VinFast Evo offers a range of up to 165 km with two fully charged batteries, while the Feliz II and Viper models can deliver a range of up to 156 km. The Viper is powered by a 3,000 W brushless direct current (BLDC) in-hub motor, capable of reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h. The Feliz II features a similar motor configuration, whereas the Evo is equipped with a 2,450 W in-hub motor. However, specifications for the Indian market are yet to be disclosed.
VinFast stated that its product rollout will expand over time as it strengthens its presence in India. “All products will be tailored to suit local usage conditions and mobility habits of the market,” the company added.
Last year, the company started selling electric cars in India. Now, it is adding electric two-wheelers and buses to its list of products. This action is part of its larger plan to gain a strong presence in many EV segments in the country.
VinFast’s entry is expected to intensify competition in India’s electric scooter market, currently led by players such as TVS Motor Company, Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy, and Ola Electric.
VinFast has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu to get about 200 hectares of land at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Thoothukudi to help with its manufacturing plans. The site will be used to make more two-wheelers.
“This agreement creates opportunities for VinFast to diversify its product portfolio from electric cars and electric buses to electric two-wheelers and charging infrastructure while reaffirming its long-term commitment to the world’s third-largest automotive market,” the company said.
