Agratas, the Tata Group’s global battery business, has reached a significant construction milestone at its battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat, with the completion of the main steel structure. The development marks a crucial step toward operational readiness as the company progresses toward its planned production start in 2027.
The finished structural framework is about 700 meters long and 150 meters wide, with a height of 34 meters at its highest point. The building takes up about 105,000 square meters of land. The main structure needed more than 24,000 tonnes of steel to build, and at its busiest time, more than 2,500 people were working on it.
Strong Domestic Sourcing and Project Execution
A key highlight of the project is its strong emphasis on domestic sourcing. All structural steel and a majority of construction materials have been procured within India, supporting local supply chains and strengthening national industrial capabilities.
The project is being executed by Tata Projects Limited in collaboration with Tata Consulting Engineers and other partners. The development process has maintained a strong focus on safety standards, quality control, and disciplined project management to ensure timely execution.
20 GWh Capacity to Support EV and Energy Storage Demand
When it is up and running, the Sanand facility will make high-tech battery cells for electric vehicles and storing energy. The plant will be able to produce 20 GWh of electricity per year in its first phase. This will make it a key part of India’s move to cleaner energy.
The facility aligns with India’s broader goals of achieving net zero emissions by 2070 and reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. It is also expected to play an important role in strengthening the country’s position in the global battery value chain.
Employment Generation and Global Expansion Strategy
The project is expected to create a lot of jobs in areas other than manufacturing, such as production, engineering, operations, maintenance, and quality assurance. Agratas is also putting money into programs that help workers learn new skills so that there will be more skilled workers in the growing battery industry.
In parallel, the company is developing a second battery manufacturing facility in Bridgwater, UK, as part of its global expansion strategy. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and advanced energy storage solutions, Agratas continues to support both national and global decarbonisation goals.
