BMW Group and CATL have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Beijing to strengthen cooperation on cross-border battery passport data trials and coordinated carbon reduction across their supply chains.
The agreement reflects the growing importance of digital traceability and emissions transparency in the global electric vehicle (EV) battery industry. The signing took place during German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to China, accompanied by a delegation of German business leaders. Against this diplomatic backdrop, the initiative aims to support compliant and smooth battery data flows while advancing joint decarbonization efforts throughout the value chain, reinforcing Sino-German collaboration in sustainable manufacturing.
Focus on Battery Passport and Digital Traceability
Under the MoU, BMW and CATL will look into how battery passport systems can be used in real life to make digital management and data sharing better across global supply chains. The battery passport idea is meant to keep track of important information like carbon footprint, materials, and lifecycle data. This helps companies meet the rules in big global markets.
As governments make it harder to report carbon emissions over a product’s life, projects like this one are seen as necessary to keep access to international markets. The partnership will help both businesses adapt to changing global rules and encourage the creation of low-carbon products. It also wants to help standardise battery information and data frameworks be used more widely around the world.
Long-Standing Strategic Partnership
BMW and CATL have been working together strategically since 2012. They have worked together for more than ten years to make batteries, do research, and come up with new technologies. CATL is now one of BMW’s main battery suppliers.
Looking ahead, CATL stated it will continue pursuing open collaboration with global partners, leveraging technological innovation to accelerate the green transition and help shape a more sustainable future for the automotive industry.
The new MoU is another step toward making the world work together more on clean mobility and building a sustainable supply chain.
