Building the Brain of Battery Storage: Xbattery and India’s Indigenous BMS Mission

A battery can store energy, but it cannot think. The responsibility of making every battery safe, efficient and intelligent rests with one often-overlooked technology—the Battery Management System (BMS). As India accelerates towards an electrified future, companies like Xbattery are proving that the country’s battery ambitions will not be defined by cells alone, but by the intelligence that powers them.

At India Energy Storage Week (IESW) 2026, Shweta Kumari, Sub-Editor, The Battery Magazine, spoke with Satish Reddy, Founder, Xbattery, about the growing importance of indigenous Battery Management Systems, the role of AI in battery intelligence, cybersecurity concerns around imported electronics, and why India’s next manufacturing success story could begin with the brain behind every battery.

Xbattery has been making waves in India’s battery electronics ecosystem. Could you introduce the company and tell us what you’re showcasing at India Energy Storage Week this year?

Xbattery designs and manufactures advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) for both electric vehicles and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Our core expertise lies in high-voltage battery management systems above 100V, which are becoming increasingly important as India scales electric mobility and grid-scale energy storage.

At India Energy Storage Week, we are showcasing our complete portfolio of BMS solutions for EVs and energy storage applications. The event gives us an excellent opportunity to connect with OEMs, system integrators and potential partners while demonstrating how indigenous battery electronics can support India’s clean energy transition.

 As Battery Energy Storage Systems become increasingly intelligent, what role does the Battery Management System play in this transformation?

The Battery Management System is the intelligence behind every battery pack.

If you open any battery pack, you will primarily find two major components—the battery cells and the electronics. While the cells store energy, they cannot make decisions. It is the BMS that continuously monitors, protects and optimizes the battery’s operation.

One challenge India faces today is that nearly 90% of Battery Management Systems are imported. From a strategic and cybersecurity perspective, this creates unnecessary dependence. Since BMS controls critical battery functions, having indigenous technology becomes extremely important—not only for safety and performance but also for national technological self-reliance.

Building Indian-designed BMS solutions allows better regulatory oversight, stronger cybersecurity and greater confidence in critical energy infrastructure.

How is Xbattery contributing towards building an indigenous Battery Management System ecosystem in India?

Our entire company is dedicated to one mission—developing advanced Battery Management Systems.

We have specialized firmware engineers, hardware engineers and PCB design teams working exclusively on building intelligent battery electronics. Rather than depending on imported technology, we are creating our own platforms that can serve multiple battery applications.

Our vision extends beyond meeting domestic demand. As more countries adopt a China Plus One sourcing strategy, we believe India has an opportunity to emerge as a global hub for battery electronics. We want Indian-designed Battery Management Systems to compete successfully in international markets as well.

Xbattery and India's Indigenous BMS Mission

 

‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ are reshaping India’s manufacturing landscape. What is your perspective on this movement?

I strongly support it.

Perhaps this transition should have begun many years earlier, but it is encouraging to see manufacturing finally receiving the attention it deserves.

India enjoys several natural advantages, including engineering talent, competitive manufacturing costs and a large domestic market. When these strengths are combined with growing investments in clean energy, battery technology and advanced manufacturing, they create tremendous opportunities.

We are witnessing the convergence of multiple sectors—electric mobility, renewable energy, battery storage and domestic manufacturing. Being part of this transformation is exciting because it positions India to become not just a consumer of technology but also a global technology developer and exporter.

What key trends are you observing in India’s battery and EV industry, and how do you see the market evolving over the next five years?

The biggest trend is the rapid growth of electric mobility and energy storage.

Today, many electric passenger vehicles still depend on imported Battery Management Systems. I believe this will gradually change over the coming years as Indian companies develop competitive indigenous alternatives.

By 2030, I expect electric vehicles to account for nearly 30% of passenger vehicle sales, and I believe a significant proportion of these vehicles could be powered by Indian-developed BMS technology.

We are already seeing strong adoption across two-wheelers and three-wheelers, and I expect the same transition to accelerate across passenger cars, commercial vehicles, buses and trucks.

What innovations can the industry expect from Xbattery in the coming years?

One of our major focus areas is developing high-voltage Battery Management Systems for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems, particularly 1,500-volt platforms used in containerized storage solutions.

Beyond hardware, we are building an intelligent software ecosystem around battery management. This includes AI-powered analytics for accurately estimating State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH), along with cloud connectivity, telemetry capabilities and digital twin technologies.

Our objective is to deliver not just electronic hardware but a complete intelligent battery management platform that improves safety, reliability and operational efficiency.

From an industry perspective, what is one policy change that could significantly accelerate India’s Battery Management System ecosystem?

One important step would be creating a more level playing field for domestic manufacturers.

Today, imported Battery Management Systems—particularly from China—are often available at very low prices because of aggressive pricing strategies. This makes it difficult for indigenous companies investing heavily in research, development and cybersecurity to compete.

Appropriate policy measures that encourage local value addition and discourage dumping would help strengthen India’s domestic Battery Management System ecosystem. In the long run, this would improve technology development, cybersecurity, manufacturing capability and supply chain resilience for the entire battery industry.

BharatBMS has been positioned as an indigenous battery electronics platform. What has been the industry’s response so far, and how do you plan to scale its adoption across EV and stationary storage applications?

We have received very positive feedback from the industry. For the last one year we have been working closely with several auto OEMs. Our products have also been tested at the ARAI facility for mobility applications. On the manufacturing side, we are using partner facilities that can help us scale to thousands of BMS boards per day. We have also partnered with NXP and their distributors for component procurement. This combination of OEM engagement, testing, manufacturing capacity, and supply partnerships will help us scale adoption across both EV and stationary storage applications.

Battery intelligence is increasingly moving beyond hardware into software, AI and predictive analytics. How do you see Battery Management Systems evolving over the next decade?

We expect AI to be present directly on the BMS board itself. Our focus is on distributed applications. Training and inference chips can be available on the board, which will make the boards more intelligent and customized for the unique cells packed in each battery pack. Predictive maintenance through digital twins is also likely to become a normal practice in the future.

As India aims to become a global manufacturing hub for batteries and energy storage, what role do you see Indian deep-tech startups like Xbattery playing in building globally competitive battery electronics?

The low-hanging fruit for Indian deep-tech companies is the intelligence layer and physical AI electronics. Global companies want alternatives to China, and we are placed nicely in this space. With renewed interest in manufacturing in India and growing capital availability, there are huge opportunities for everyone. Several areas are open for innovation — semiconductor chips such as AFEs or voltage gauges, MOSFETs, connectors, inverters, DC-DC converters, motor controllers, and more.
