The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, celebrated its 25th Foundation Day at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in the presence of senior dignitaries, policymakers, partner organisations, and stakeholders.
Shri Manohar Lal, Cabinet Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, while Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), delivered the keynote address. Shri Krushna Chandra Panigrahy, Director General, BEE, welcomed attendees and reflected on the Bureau’s journey in advancing energy efficiency nationwide.
Minister Highlights Role of Energy Efficiency
Shri Manohar Lal, Cabinet Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs said, “Prevention is better than cure. BEE functions as a preventive institution for the power sector. Every unit of electricity conserved today reduces emissions and secures a cleaner future.”
He applauded BEE for its contributions to India’s climate goals, noting the country has reduced GDP emission intensity by 36% since 2005 and achieved 52% non-fossil fuel capacity ahead of the 2030 target.
He highlighted key BEE initiatives, including the Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO), Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Scheme, Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE), ADEETIE for MSMEs, Standards & Labelling Programme, Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC), and transport efficiency measures. He emphasised, “Energy efficiency is central to the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047, especially in emerging sectors like data centres and AI.”
Secretary’s Address and Key Launches
Shri Pankaj Agarwal described energy efficiency as India’s “First Fuel” and a crucial tool for balancing energy security, affordability, and sustainability. He noted BEE’s efforts in industrial decarbonisation, cooling efficiency, and transport sector improvements, along with the establishment of energy efficiency hubs.
The event featured the launch of the BEE@25 logo, symbolising energy efficiency, sustainability, and innovation, and the RCO Portal (http://www.rco.beeindia.gov.in) to enhance monitoring, compliance, and coordination across energy programmes.
The BEE Star Label Mobile App, developed with CLASP, was also unveiled.
“Consumers can now scan star-labelled appliances to access authentic energy performance information, model details, and compliance status, promoting informed purchasing decisions,” officials said.
Celebrating BEE’s Journey
A BEE Journey Video highlighted the Bureau’s milestones and contributions over 24 years. The celebration included a fireside chat with former Directors General and felicitation of retired State Designated Agency officials for their contributions.
The 25th Foundation Day reinforced BEE’s commitment to sustainable growth, national energy security, and environmental responsibility, paving the way for a Viksit and Atmanirbhar Bharat.
