Engie Acquires 438-MW/876-MWh Battery Storage Project

Engie Zielona Energia has acquired the special purpose vehicle (SPV) behind a 438-MW/876-MWh battery energy storage project in Trebaczew, central Poland. Mithra Energy, a member of the Futureal Group, developed the project to date.
The project is expected to reach shovel-ready status in the fourth quarter, with commissioning targeted for the first quarter of 2029.
Located in Poland’s Lodz province, the Trebaczew storage facility will be directly connected to the Trebaczew power station. Engie said the connection will facilitate power evacuation, ease pressure on local transmission infrastructure and improve power reliability across the region.
The acquisition is part of Engie’s strategy to build a portfolio of large-scale energy storage assets supporting grid stability, security of supply and Poland’s energy transition. It follows the company’s recent acquisition of the 250-MW/1,000-MWh BESS project in Tursko Wielkie.
“Expanding our portfolio of large-scale energy storage facilities is a priority for us, as these installations constitute an essential foundation for a modern, renewable-based economy,” said Piotr Rogiz, country manager at Engie Polska.
Engie has also accelerated the expansion of its European energy storage portfolio. In July and August, the group completed a series of strategic acquisitions, construction starts and project commissioning activities across several European countries, adding a combined 1.1 GW/3.3 GWh of storage capacity.
