India has reaffirmed its position as a global frontrunner in the green hydrogen transition, with Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy & Power, Shri Shripad Y. Naik, announcing that the country is on track to command 10% of the world’s green hydrogen demand by 2030. The announcement was made during the High-Level Address at the 3rd International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH 2025) at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.
Shri Naik highlighted that India’s rapid energy transition—driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s climate commitments at COP-26—is one of the boldest worldwide. The nation is progressing steadily towards achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070. With nearly 260 GW of installed non-fossil capacity, India’s strong renewable foundation is now powering the next major leap: the Green Hydrogen Revolution.
According to the Minister, India is emerging as a major hub for global hydrogen trade and technology. With an expected green hydrogen market growth of 20–40% annually, India is poised to become a leading producer and exporter of green hydrogen and derivatives such as green ammonia and green methanol. Shri Naik urged industries to accelerate electrolyser manufacturing, build hydrogen hubs and expand investment pipelines.
The Minister emphasized that green hydrogen is more than an energy shift—it’s an economic and societal transformation that will strengthen India’s role in global clean-energy value chains.
National Green Hydrogen Mission Making Rapid Progress
Providing an update on the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), launched in January 2023, Shri Naik stated that the mission has moved from planning to implementation. Key achievements include:
- ₹17,000 crore in incentives approved for production and electrolyser manufacturing
- 3,000 MW per annum electrolyser manufacturing capacity awarded
- 8.62 lakh MTPA green hydrogen production capacity allocated
- SECI discovering world-leading low prices for 7.24 lakh MTPA green ammonia supply
- 20,000 MTPA green hydrogen projects sanctioned for IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL refineries
These developments reflect India’s accelerating capabilities in large-scale hydrogen production and industrial decarbonization.
Whole-of-Government Strategy Driving the Transition
Addressing the conference, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, praised MNRE for unifying researchers, innovators, and industries. He noted that the Green Hydrogen Mission showcases a successful “whole-of-government, whole-of-nation” model, breaking institutional silos and integrating India’s scientific missions across sectors like biofuels, EVs, hydrogen, and clean mobility.
Senior officials including Shri Akash Tripathi (SECI) and Shri Abhay Bakre (Mission Director – NGHM) highlighted India’s rapidly maturing hydrogen ecosystem, globally competitive pricing, and strong investor confidence.
The two-day ICGH 2025 conference hosts global policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators for high-level discussions on hydrogen technologies, policy frameworks, infrastructure, and international partnerships—solidifying India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing green hydrogen economies.
