Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) has issued an Expression of Interest (EOI) inviting proposals for the deployment of a 60 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Odisha, marking a significant step toward integrating renewable energy into its operations and strengthening grid support capabilities.
The EOI is aimed at technology providers, EPC contractors and battery manufacturers with proven experience in utility-scale energy storage. Through this initiative, MCL intends to assess available technologies and implementation approaches for developing battery storage assets aligned with its sustainability roadmap.
Scope of the initiative
The proposed battery system is intended to support renewable-energy integration, provide operational flexibility and enhance power reliability across MCL’s infrastructure. The scope of the EOI covers:
- Design, supply and integration of battery energy storage systems
- Technology evaluation across commercially viable chemistries
- Implementation models suitable for large utility operations
- Long-term performance, safety and maintenance considerations
By inviting technical and financial inputs at the EOI stage, MCL aims to identify the most cost-effective and scalable pathway before proceeding with a formal tender.
Strategic importance
Battery storage has become a critical enabler for India’s clean-energy transition — particularly in regions with growing solar and wind capacity. Through the proposed 60 MWh system, MCL is positioning itself to:
- Improve reliability of renewable-energy usage
- Reduce dependency on traditional power back-up systems
- Enable peak-load management and grid stabilisation
- Strengthen sustainability planning across operations
The move also reflects a broader shift within the coal sector toward diversification and low-carbon technologies.
