MG Motor has announced plans to introduce its semi-solid-state battery technology in Europe by the end of 2026, following the successful launch of its first mass-produced electric vehicle equipped with the new battery in China. The move marks a significant step in expanding advanced battery technologies into global markets.
The automaker, owned by SAIC Motor, unveiled the new MG4 at the Chengdu Auto Show, describing it as “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle. Deliveries of the model began in China in December, where it is priced at under $15,000, making it one of the most affordable EVs featuring next-generation battery technology.
Performance Benefits and Technology Advancements
The new MG SolidCore Battery uses semi-solid-state electrolytes, which give it many performance benefits over regular lithium-ion batteries. The company says that the technology gives drivers a longer range, faster charging times, better safety, and better performance in cold weather.
The solid-state electrolyte also protects each cell, which helps the battery last longer. MG said that the battery system has been “refined to fit regional road conditions, climate changes, and regulatory needs,” making it ready for use in markets all over the world.
Specifications and Expected European Rollout
In China, the MG4 is powered by a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, offering a CLTC range of 530 km (330 miles). However, when introduced in Europe, the WLTP-rated range is expected to be around 400 km (248 miles).
The official price for Europe hasn’t been announced yet, but the MG4 Urban variant is expected to stay competitively priced, probably in line with the current model, which starts at around £23,495 ($31,300). The current MG4 Urban has a 53.9 kWh LFP battery and can go up to 258 miles on a single charge.
Future Expansion Across MG Portfolio
MG plans to extend the semi-solid-state battery technology to additional models, including the upcoming MG 4X electric SUV, further strengthening its EV lineup.
MG is now at the forefront of the adoption of next-generation batteries. This is because automakers around the world are still looking into solid-state and semi-solid-state technologies for electric vehicles of the future.
