Malaysia-based renewable energy company Northern Solar Holdings Berhad has secured two contracts totalling 189 MWac of solar capacity integrated with battery energy storage systems (BESS) to supply electricity to two data centres in Malaysia. The contracts were awarded to its wholly owned subsidiary, Northern Solar Assets Sdn. Bhd., under the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS).
The agreements will support renewable energy supply for Malaysia’s expanding data centre sector, which is witnessing increasing electricity demand.
100 MW Solar and BESS Contract for Data Centre
The first contract covers 100 MWac of solar capacity integrated with battery energy storage systems for a data centre developed by a Malaysian property investment and data centre infrastructure company.
The facility has an estimated annual electricity requirement of 262.8 million kWh. The solar and storage project is expected to support renewable energy supply for its electricity consumption.
89 MW Solar and Storage Project
The second agreement covers 89 MWac of solar capacity paired with BESS. The contract was awarded by a Malaysian subsidiary of a Singapore-based data centre operator.
The associated data centre has an annual electricity requirement of 233.89 million kWh, adding to the combined energy demand covered by the two agreements.
Nearly 500 Million kWh Annual Electricity Demand
Together, the two data centres are expected to require nearly 500 million kWh of electricity annually. The contracts will enable Northern Solar Holdings to expand its renewable energy supply portfolio while supporting the growing electricity requirements of Malaysia’s data centre industry.
The project values and commencement dates for both contracts have not been disclosed.
The agreements are being implemented under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme, which facilitates renewable electricity supply arrangements for corporate consumers and supports the country’s renewable energy deployment.
