NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the renewable energy arm of NTPC Limited, has invited bids on behalf of NTPC UP Green Energy Limited (NUGEL) for setting up a 50 MW/200 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. The project is aimed at strengthening energy storage capacity in the state and supporting the growing integration of renewable power into the electricity grid.
The company has issued the tender through a domestic competitive bidding route under a single-stage, two-envelope process, which includes Techno-Commercial and Price Bids, followed by a Reverse Auction. The selected bidder will execute the project on a turnkey Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis.
Under the scope of work, the contractor will be responsible for the complete design, engineering, supply, transportation, installation, testing, and commissioning of the grid-connected battery storage facility. The project will also involve integrating the BESS with the solar plant infrastructure at the 33 kV pooling switchgear, which is being developed separately. In addition, the contractor will have to ensure seamless connectivity up to the Point of Interconnection (POI) with the Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL) grid.
The tender lays down a series of performance benchmarks for the project. The battery storage system is expected to operate for 25 years and support daily single-cycle charging and discharging. The batteries must be capable of completing at least 10,000 charge-discharge cycles over their lifetime. The system is also required to maintain a minimum monthly Round Trip Efficiency (RTE) of 80%, including auxiliary consumption, along with a monthly availability of 98%.
To ensure long-term reliability, the selected bidder must guarantee a minimum dispatchable capacity of 92% at the POI for 15 years. The system should deliver 100% capacity at the Commercial Operation Date (CoD) and maintain 95% capacity during the first year of operation. Recognising losses that occur during transmission and transformation, NGEL has specified a minimum installed nameplate capacity of 220 MWh so that a deliverable capacity of 200 MWh can be achieved. Any future augmentation required to maintain these performance levels will have to be carried out by the contractor.
Beyond construction, the contract includes a 15-year Operations and Maintenance (O&M) commitment covering warranties, annual maintenance services under a Service Level Agreement (SLA), and project insurance. The selected contractor will also bear responsibility for any Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM) charges associated with operating the storage facility.
As per the tender schedule, the sale of bidding documents will start from June 18, 2026, and end on June 29, 2026. Bidders interested in participating will be able to submit their proposals online till July 10, 2026, with the opening of technical bids scheduled for the same day.
The project is another milestone in NTPC Green Energy’s quest to develop large-scale energy storage infrastructure that is crucial for a reliable power supply as India’s renewable energy capacity continues to grow.
