In a significant step towards strengthening India’s clean energy portfolio, NTPC Limited has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Électricité de France (EDF) to explore collaboration in nuclear power development. The agreement, formalised after approvals from key government ministries and departments, focuses on assessing the feasibility of deploying advanced nuclear technologies in India.
Framework for Joint Nuclear Exploration
The MoU was signed by Arnada Prasad Samal, CGM (Nuclear Cell) at NTPC, and Vakisasi Ramany, Senior Vice President (International Nuclear Development) at EDF.
Under the agreement, both companies will jointly evaluate multiple aspects of nuclear project development, including:
- Feasibility studies for nuclear energy projects
- Assessment of EDF’s European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology
- Identification of suitable project sites in India
- Evaluation of tariff structures and economic viability
- Localisation opportunities for large-scale deployment
- Technical collaboration and support
This partnership marks a strategic effort to examine the role of nuclear power in India’s long-term energy mix.
Focus on Skill Development and Expertise
A key element of the collaboration is workforce development. NTPC and EDF will explore structured programmes aimed at building specialised skills required for nuclear energy projects.
- Development of technical expertise in nuclear operations
- Training and knowledge-sharing initiatives
- Strengthening India’s long-term nuclear capabilities
This initiative is expected to support India’s ambition of expanding its nuclear energy capacity with a skilled workforce.
Alignment with NTPC’s Clean Energy Strategy
The partnership aligns with NTPC’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and enhance energy security. The company has been actively expanding into multiple clean energy segments, including:
- Renewable energy
- Green hydrogen
- Nuclear power
- Pumped hydro storage
- Battery energy storage systems
- Waste-to-energy solutions
NTPC currently operates over 89 GW of installed capacity, with an additional 32 GW under development. The company aims to scale its total capacity to 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable sources.
The collaboration of NTPC and EDF for Nuclear Power represents a forward-looking step in integrating advanced nuclear technologies into India’s energy landscape. By focusing on feasibility, localisation, and skill development, the partnership aims to support sustainable power generation while strengthening the country’s long-term energy security.
