As per the latest updates to the Ministry of Power on government appointments, Pankaj Kumar has been named Joint Secretary for a period of five years. He is an IAS officer (2002 batch) from the Uttar Pradesh cadre and has more than two decades’ worth of experience in administration (governance and policy) through various positions held over this time. His new position follows a senior bureaucrat reshuffle across central government agencies.
As the new Joint Secretary, he will have direct responsibility for assisting with policy-making, execution, and coordination in the energy (electricity) sector, which is currently going through a fundamental transition as a result of renewable energy growth, modernizing of the electric grid through smart technologies, and integrating storage into the grid.
The Ministry of Power will play an essential role in shaping India’s electricity landscape, both in terms of how electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed, and how to facilitate the development of new clean energy targets and infrastructure. The position of Joint Secretary will play a vital part in the reform process and ensuring that national power programs are implemented effectively.
Kumar’s appointment is expected to strengthen administrative leadership within the ministry as India continues to push toward its long-term energy goals and power sector transformation.
