The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) has made a lot of progress in getting people to use rooftop solar (RTS) since it started in February 2024. As of March 20, 2026, the most recent data shows that the program has installed a total of 9,566.89 MW of rooftop solar capacity across the country.
The scheme aims to achieve RTS installation in one crore households, which is projected to generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over 25 years, leading to a reduction of 720 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions during the lifetime of the rooftop solar projects. Additionally, the initiative is expected to create approximately 17 lakh jobs across sectors including manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales and installations, operation and maintenance (O&M) services, and financial services.
The PMSG: MBY operates as a demand-driven scheme, allowing all residential consumers with grid-connected electricity through their local DISCOM to avail of subsidies for rooftop solar systems via the National Portal.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced several measures to accelerate rooftop solar adoption and achieve the target of one crore households:
- Streamlined Online Process: From application to subsidy disbursal directly into consumers’ bank accounts via the National Portal.
- Collateral-Free Loans: Available from nationalized banks at concessional interest rates of repo rate plus 50 bps (currently 5.75% per annum) for a tenure of 10 years.
- Regulatory Simplifications: Technical feasibility requirements waived; auto load enhancement up to 10 kW introduced.
- Net Metering Integration: Net metering agreement included as part of the application on the portal.
- RESCO/Utility-Led Aggregation Models: Included to promote diverse adoption models.
- Vendor Registration Simplification: Ensuring sufficient qualified vendors are available nationwide.
- Capacity Building: Training programs to create skilled manpower for installations.
- Awareness Campaigns: Print, TV, radio, and regional outreach programs to educate citizens.
- Monitoring and Review: Regular progress tracking at state and DISCOM levels; regional review meetings conducted.
- Grievance Redressal: Operational call center 15555 in 12 languages to address consumer complaints promptly.
MNRE and REC Ltd., as the National Programme Implementing Agency (NPIA), coordinate closely with all DISCOMs to ensure effective implementation of the PMSG: MBY scheme.
