In a significant clean-energy breakthrough for the region, Rondo Energy and SCG Cleanergy have officially commenced operations of Southeast Asia’s first industrial heat battery at SCG’s cement plant in Saraburi Province, Thailand. The announcement was made on November 13, 2025, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by company leaders and industry stakeholders.
The newly commissioned unit is now supplying 2.3 MWth of continuous steam, drawing power from both the grid and a nearby floating solar farm. This superheated steam drives a steam turbine, enabling 24-hour clean electricity generation for cement production—an advancement that positions the technology as a scalable alternative for decarbonizing heavy industry.
Highlighting the milestone, Rondo CEO Eric Trusiewicz stated:
“Today we’re announcing three big steps in Rondo’s journey. We’re launching our first unit that is part of our new modular sizing approach, our first heat battery in South-East Asia, and the only one worldwide delivering high-pressure steam used for electric power generation.”
The installation features a 33 MWh Rondo Heat Battery, the first constructed using Rondo’s new modular platform, which now supports flexible unit sizes ranging from 33 MWh to over 1 GWh. This common-design platform uses mass-manufactured brick and wire heating elements that can be combined for a wide range of industrial needs—from smaller heat-intensive factories to refineries and chemical plants requiring more than 100 MWth of thermal output.
The companies emphasized that the entire system was manufactured and assembled in Thailand, leveraging local supply chains. This approach not only accelerates deployment but also reduces cost and strengthens Thailand’s positioning as a clean-tech manufacturing hub.
The partnership between Rondo Energy and SCG Cleanergy is set to continue expanding, as SCG Cleanergy works on new clean-industrial-heat projects across Southeast Asia powered by Rondo’s thermal-storage technology. The announcement follows Rondo’s recent commissioning of the world’s largest industrial heat battery in California, underscoring its global leadership in electric thermal energy storage (ETES).
This Thai installation is also unique because it is currently the only heat battery in the world driving a steam turbine, boosting the cement plant’s heat-recovery turbine output and showcasing how thermal storage can integrate directly with existing industrial equipment.
Sharing the project’s significance, Eric Trusiewicz added:
“This project shows that powering industry with clean energy is not just possible—it’s economical and fast. Our team and SCG built this first-of-its-kind system in just eight months. It’s a model for how industry can go electric anywhere in the world.”
SCG Cleanergy CEO Attapong Sathitmanothum highlighted the broader regional relevance, saying:
“Integrating the Rondo Heat Battery marks a turning point for Southeast Asian industry, because heat-intensive industries like textiles, chemicals, and food processing are growing rapidly here. SCG Cleanergy is bringing SCG’s strengths and new technologies to deliver low-cost clean energy to help our customers across the region decarbonize as they grow, in line with SCG’s vision of Inclusive Green Growth — driving the transformation of industries toward a low-carbon society in collaboration with all sectors, while strengthening business competitiveness to ensure the sustainable growth of businesses, communities, and the environment. This milestone also represents another important step toward achieving SCG’s Net Zero 2050 goal.”
With strong collaboration and proven deployment speed, Rondo Energy and SCG Cleanergy now aim to scale manufacturing and installations to meet the rapidly rising demand for industrial decarbonization solutions across the world.
