India has taken a major step toward expanding its clean energy capacity, with the government appointing Solar Energy Corporation of India as the National Programme Implementing Agency (NPIA) for the Small Hydro Power (SHP) Development Scheme from FY 2026-27 to FY 2030-31.
The scheme, launched under the guidance of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, carries a total outlay of ₹2,584.60 crore and aims to support the development of around 1,500 MW of new small hydro power capacity across India.
As the implementing agency, SECI will oversee project appraisal, implementation monitoring, Central Financial Assistance (CFA) disbursement, database management, and overall execution of the programme nationwide.
The initiative is expected to accelerate decentralized clean energy generation, promote sustainable development in hilly and remote regions, create employment opportunities, and strengthen India’s climate and energy security goals.
In addition, the scheme focuses on innovation, detailed project report (DPR) preparation, institutional support, and capacity building to boost the country’s small hydro power ecosystem.
