Vikram Solar has inaugurated a 6 GW solar PV module manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion of large-scale solar manufacturing capacity in India.
The facility was virtually inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay as part of the state government’s inauguration programme held in Chennai.
Spread across a 186-acre greenfield campus, the Gangaikondan facility is expected to generate employment opportunities for more than 800 skilled professionals in the region. The plant is part of Vikram Solar’s broader strategy to build an integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem and increase domestic value addition across the photovoltaic supply chain.
Integrated Solar Manufacturing Hub
The Gangaikondan campus is planned to expand beyond solar PV module manufacturing, with Vikram Solar aiming to establish capabilities covering solar cells, wafers and ingots at the site. The integrated approach is intended to bring multiple stages of the solar manufacturing value chain under one location.
The company is also pursuing a significant expansion of its solar cell manufacturing capabilities. Vikram Solar plans to establish 9 GW of solar cell manufacturing capacity by FY27, with additional capacity expected to be developed subsequently.
According to the company, the manufacturing expansion will help strengthen domestic supply chains, improve resilience and support greater localisation of solar equipment manufacturing in India.
Focus on Tamil Nadu’s Clean Energy Ecosystem
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior Tamil Nadu government officials and representatives, including Industries Minister S. Keerthana, Chief Secretary Dr. M. Sai Kumar IAS, Additional Chief Secretary – Industries Dr. S. Vijayakumar IAS, TIDCO Principal Secretary and CMD Dr. D. Karthikeyan IAS, TNPL Chairman and Managing Director Kumar Jayant IAS, SIPCOT Managing Director S. A. Raman IAS, and Guidance Tamil Nadu Managing Director and CEO Deepak Jacob IAS.
Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, said the company remains committed to Tamil Nadu and intends to leverage the state’s industrial ecosystem and skilled workforce to develop a more self-reliant clean energy value chain in India.
The Gangaikondan project is expected to strengthen Vikram Solar’s domestic manufacturing footprint while contributing to industrial development and employment generation in Tamil Nadu. The facility also aligns with India’s broader push to expand domestic renewable energy manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported components.
With planned expansion across modules, cells, wafers and ingots, the Gangaikondan campus could emerge as an important hub in Vikram Solar’s long-term manufacturing strategy and India’s growing solar energy supply chain.
