The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) has given the green light to rates for two solar power projects in Tamil Nadu that also have battery energy storage systems. The projects will provide electricity at a rate of ₹4.47 per unit, which is a step forward for the state in its efforts to increase the amount of renewable energy available and handle peak power demand.
The approval allows the projects to combine solar power generation with battery storage, enabling electricity produced during the daytime to be stored and supplied during evening peak demand hours.
Details of the Solar-Plus-Storage Projects
Each project will have 15 MW of solar power and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 15 MW and 45 MWh. The projects will be built in different parts of Tamil Nadu and will help make sure that the grid gets reliable renewable power.
The solar power plants will make electricity during the day, and the battery systems will store any extra power and release it later in the day when demand for electricity goes up.
Developers and Locations
The projects have been awarded to two developers:
- Evolve Green Energies
- BVG India
The solar-plus-battery plants will be built in the Tamil Nadu districts of Karur and Thiruvarur. These places were chosen to help keep the grid stable and make it easier to use renewable energy in the area.
Role of Battery Storage in Renewable Energy
Battery energy storage systems are becoming increasingly important as India expands its renewable energy capacity. Solar power generation is highest during the day, but electricity demand often rises in the evening.
Battery systems store extra solar energy and release it during peak hours. This helps make sure that the power supply is stable and reliable while also cutting down on the need for traditional power sources.
