Tata Motors Signs a PPA with Welspun for 86 MW Wind-Solar Hybrid Project

Tata Motors has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Welspun Renewable Energy Private Limited (WREPL) to jointly develop an 86 MW wind-solar hybrid renewable energy project. The project will supply clean electricity to four of Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle manufacturing plants located in Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Karnataka.

Once operational, the project is expected to generate around 200 million units of renewable energy every year, helping offset more than 1.4 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually. The power produced will be dedicated entirely to Tata Motors’ manufacturing facilities and will support its commercial vehicle production operations under a long-term agreement, backed by co-investment from both companies.

The initiative is aimed at significantly increasing the share of renewable energy in Tata Motors’ manufacturing processes and advancing its RE100 commitment, under which the company plans to source 100% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030. It also aligns with the automaker’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions across its manufacturing operations.

Commenting on the development, Vishal Badshah, Vice President – Operations at Tata Motors, said the project underscores the company’s focus on greener and more energy-efficient manufacturing. He added that the scale and integrated design of the wind-solar hybrid system will help ensure a reliable supply of renewable power for key facilities while steadily reducing carbon emissions across operations over time.

Tata Motors is one of India’s leading automotive manufacturers and part of the Tata Group, with a strong presence across passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and electric mobility solutions. The company plays a key role in India’s transportation and industrial ecosystem, especially in the commercial vehicle segment where it serves logistics, infrastructure, and business mobility needs. Over the years, Tata Motors has been steadily shifting toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility solutions, including electric vehicles and low-emission technologies. Alongside product innovation, the company is also focusing heavily on decarbonising its manufacturing operations by adopting renewable energy and improving efficiency, which aligns with long-term climate goals such as RE100 and net-zero commitments.

Welspun Renewable Energy Private Limited is part of the Welspun Group and operates in India’s renewable energy sector, focusing on the development and management of clean power projects. The company is involved in building large-scale wind, solar, and hybrid energy solutions that support industrial and utility customers in transitioning toward greener electricity sources. With a strong emphasis on sustainability and long-term energy partnerships, Welspun Renewable Energy works closely with corporate clients to design reliable, cost-efficient renewable power supply systems. Its projects contribute to reducing carbon emissions while strengthening India’s overall renewable energy capacity, making it a key player in the country’s clean energy transition.
