Torrent Power Expands Renewable Pipeline Despite Q1 Profit Decline

Torrent Power Limited reported a mixed financial performance for the first quarter of FY2027, posting modest revenue growth while witnessing a decline in net profit. The company, however, continued to strengthen its renewable energy portfolio and infrastructure pipeline, reinforcing its long-term focus on India’s clean energy transition.

Revenue from operations rose 2.75% year-on-year to ₹8,124.15 crore during the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with ₹7,906.37 crore in the corresponding period last year. Total income also increased by 2.42% to ₹8,204.81 crore from ₹8,011.04 crore in Q1 FY26.

Net profit for the quarter declined 10.75% to ₹661.85 crore, compared to ₹741.58 crore a year earlier. On a sequential basis, however, profit nearly doubled from ₹331.49 crore reported in the March 2026 quarter, reflecting a 99.66% quarter-on-quarter increase.

The company attributed the decline in profitability to higher finance costs arising from investments in under-construction energy projects. It also faced operational challenges due to geopolitical disruptions that affected LNG supplies, impacting the performance of its gas-based thermal power plants.

Despite these headwinds, Torrent Power recorded 2% EBITDA growth, supported by robust performance in its distribution and renewable energy businesses. The distribution segment registered 10% EBITDA growth, while the renewable energy business reported 6% growth, driven by higher plant load factors and contributions from projects commissioned over the past year.

Torrent Power currently has an installed generation capacity of 6.6 GW, comprising 2.7 GW of gas-based capacity, 2.1 GW of renewable energy, and 1.8 GW of coal-based generation. The company is also developing an additional 4.2 GW of renewable energy projects, 3 GW of pumped storage capacity, and 1.6 GW of coal-based capacity.

Upon completion of these projects, Torrent Power’s total generation capacity is expected to reach approximately 12.3 GW, alongside 3 GW of pumped storage, significantly enhancing its role in supporting renewable energy integration and grid reliability as India accelerates its clean energy transition.
